Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Is she sitting pretty much full time (23½ hrs a day)? You said she's still laying, so maybe she hasn't cycled through the hormones enough to get to the zombie broody stage. Maybe just fence it off so she can't leave the area and no one can bother her for a few days.

Also, you don't want the other hens to be able to get to the chicks for at least a few days after they hatch (some say 2 weeks) because not all hens are maternal and the chicks can be seen as unwanted coop invaders, or even worse, food. Sometimes it's not a problem, but why risk it.

Quote: After Si went through a partial molt and her Winter break... she started to lay many egg farts. She had plenty of free choice oyster shells. After a couple of weeks... all was normal.

Actually, I believe she is just being naughty. She lays her egg in the box, then kicks it out onto the coop floor. They end up by the pop door, crushed by the foot traffic of hens going in an out. I am concerned she is going to foster some egg eaters this way.

it's rainy and chilly and I'm not in the mood to do much of anything but sit around. my elderly friend cancelled on me, which is fine - a friend stopped up and they are playing cards - I was invited to join them, but declined because I was happy that I didn't have to go anywhere... the roosters are crowing... I should get up and make a Pie! so I will!

Quote: She sits for about 20 hours a day. I have not seen her out and about today. When I checked on her twice this morning... she was flat and did not growl at me. She just stared off into space. I have some extra poultry netting. Maybe I can make a small area around the crate for her. I really do appreciate any and all advice. I have had chickens for 4 years now and Rumples is my first broody. Thanks again!!

I know how you feel Cheeka. I am still recovering from a nasty cold. DH is planning a new shop for car restorations, so I am home. It is cold and cloudy here. I went to HomeDepot and made it as far as the parking lot. Too darn many people there. I want to get red paint for the new pen. DH says that he has plans for a bigger coop!

I guess he figures that chickens are better than bar hopping with the girls and going to the mall. Chicken math is sneaky....

My friends and co-workers laugh at me because I am always happy when it rains. I love beautiful, cloudy skies and rain. So, why did I move to the desert?
