Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Curious here cheeka, have you tried scraping off the color of the new egg to see the underlying shell color. ..? I've a tiny bit of understanding on the egg color deal...unfortunately my memory ain't what it used to be..ha. it should be white? For a blue gene? I'm thinking you may need to get a maran hen for some chocalate color eggs too....come on, I know you're thinking it too! :)

ACW,
From what I've seen and read, shells are either white or blue depending on the gene. Brown and green or olive eggs are created toward the end of the process, where a coating of brown is added (determined by a separate gene). When you crack open an egg, peel off the membrane and look at the inside of the shell to see the base color of the egg. Brown eggs have white shells, green and olive eggs have blue shells. Much of the brown coating can be scrubbed off the outside (comes off more easily for very dark or specked eggs), but some of the brown can get impregnated into the shell and will not come off.

Additionally, a pale coating, called the bloom, is added last. It prevents bacterial infection and helps keep the eggs fresh. Depending on the amount deposited, the bloom can make brown eggs look pinkish.

The people I know doing olive eggers use Marans for the very dark brown.

Small world...don't ya miss the boardwalk? No wonder they made songs about it....gotta love the jersey shore.

I think I remember going there once. The ocean is warm and you can walk waaaaaay out from shore and not have the water go up past your waist. Horseshoe crabs too!

Beautiful here in N. Calif, but we never swim in the ocean. You get hypothermia and if you get knocked off your feet in the surf, the rip currents will suck you under and out to sea. And there are sharks. Great whites. Hubby used to free dive for abalone until a headless body was found near where he fished. Papers said the guy was ab diving and a shark got him. They never found the head.

I am familiar with Neptune. I knew a guy there. Okay. I knew a lot of people there, but one remains in my thoughts.

I miss Jersey a lot,, and HATE PA! I like Lancaster area, but that is because it is mostly farms, and my father's family is PA Dutch, and from that area. I was leaving to go back to N.J. (southern. Ocean City, N.J.) when my husband kidnapped me.
I just took another shower after cleaning the brooding pen, and turning the coop (digging waaaaaay down with my boots, and shuffling around. Works better than the rake).
I kept thinking I needed to clean the whole thing, but I don't have enough bedding. I may re-think the deep litter method next year. Okay. Obviously I am re-thinking it now. Too dirty and dusty! Not as bad as some people keep theirs though.

I am doing a swap in a few days, and everything is worrying me. The vet (and others chicken farmers) have assured me I am worried about nothing, but one person's "nothing" is another person's issue.

I just want it over already!

wow, long day and lots of posts to catch up on! I will scrape that egg in a little while, I'll let you know what I find!
You have to know that I already want marans for those gorgeous dark brown eggs, and to make more OE's! I want so many different breeds... but I will have to wait a while before I am able to do everything I want... work is way too time sucking this year, and I don't see it letting up next year, but I truly am grateful that I have steady work in the first place...
I got 4 today, 2 brown and 1 cream and 1 that I think might be from Isis, it's small, odd shaped and looked like it might be a softy, but it has a shell, but it's kinda white, I have to look at it in better light, it was getting dark already when i collected it, and the best light in the house is in the bathroom... it might have a blue tint... I don't know... after such a long day and coming home to do chicken chores immediately, and then cat chores and then dog chores... all I could do after was sit down with my feet up... give me like another half hour to just rest me bones and I will get back up and inspect those 2 eggs and make some dinner... one more long day tomorrow ~ with a late start which is nice... the regular carrier is going in to sort all the mail for me and then take the rest of the day off, I'll head in around 10 to take the mail out... but I won't finish til about 5ish, then home by 6... it will be pitch dark by then, my poor babies... but Friday and Saturday I have short days, which is so needed, my housework is piling up!

well... it's blue on the inside, you can see more blue where the membrane was peeled away. nothing really changed when I scraped the outside of the shell, just got a little shinier, but it was the same bluish green color... so I had to crack it... and since I had to crack it... I had to cook it... and since I had to cook it... I had to eat it... now I have egg burps
