I have sad news... One of the Red Star chicks is dead. She had some sort of small wound on her. I don't think that Rumples killed her. She has been very attentive with all of the chicks. There was nothing I could do. The chick was cold and rigor had set in.

I will not be replacing her. It is what it is......

Poor chickie!! But it happens...tho that doesn't make it easier I know!
My husband is worried about this specific thing happening. I would not let myself get attached to the Lav Am chicks because I am not sure who I can keep. The red stars were keepers. But Oh well.... There will be a next time. I am sure that Rumples will go broody again someday. If not her then one of her chicks will. Maybe for next years Easter HAL.

Scrambles, you've got a good probability that Rumples will brood again when these chicks are between 6-8 weeks old. once she teaches them to roost, her life goes on. she should start laying again and it begins again... sorry about the chick. it does happen.

I made fish filet for the flock. it was snowing this morning and turned to rain, stayed crappy all day... so I thought they should have extra protein for lack of bugs. I forgot to bring a basket, so I was putting the eggs in my pockets... and yep. I broke one. shattered more like it... and it did look like there was a broken egg in one of the nests, just a wet spot left. but I still have 19 in the house. sold 4 dozen this morning too.
