Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

W4W, I stumbled on the first book quite by accident, needed to kill 4 hours, and was perusing a NY Times Bestseller rack... and everything looked so dry and boring... then I spied this "kids" book... on the bottom shelf, paperback... looked cute, should be able to finish it during those 4 hours... OMG! I was laughing OUT LOUD within minutes, got a sunburn on my neck bc I didn't move except to turn pages... I read it twice that day, and went online and ordered the first 3 books in hardcover, gave the paperback to the library, and pre-ordered the 4th. I got to attend a screening of the first movie before it opened, and was riveted by how well the movie was done... I've read them in German and French, read them in English a dozen times each, have them on audio, so I could listen while I delivered the mail... haven't been so entranced by a story since Dahl, Tolkien or Lewis... Rowling is brilliant, pure whimsy!

Didn't take the girls out to trick or treat. I was thinking about it but they wouldn't stay together.

And Roger would never let the other girls have a turn at ringing the doorbell! What would she wear for a costume? A devil? No.... maybe more like a Viking raider. I can just picture the unsuspecting homeowner answering the door, holding a bowl of treats, and Roger jumps up on the rim of the bowl and tips everything into her gianormous goodie bag. Then she'd turn around and devour their jack-o-lantern!

Spot wants to be an eagle. Me too. Always wished I could fly.

Wow! Not your average fan then.

The books had been out for a while before my little guy was old enough to be interested. (His older brother only liked "realistic" fiction, so I missed them the first round.) We read them out loud and did all the voices and accents. Took seeing the first movie to learn how to pronounce Hermione's name! He was so excited to get the Harry costume. We got the shirt and tie at a thrift store and drew a scar on his forehead. Dad built the wand from a piece of fruitwood and put a light at the tip with a switch in the handle. Lumos! Dad also downloaded a copy of the marauder's map and a girl in class brought her snowy owl stuffy to be his Hedwig. He looked very Harry!

I volunteered a lot in the school library. There are tons of great books for kids and I even had my own account to check them out! Had to read the "girl" books on my own, though. Some awesome stories!

Have you been to that Harry Potter theme park? Somewhere in Florida? I would love to see Diagon Alley and get some chocolate frogs. (DH thought that name was clever -- diagonally! He can never know that I didn't figure it out on my own!

W4W, on a trip to Germany, I found a candy store that sold Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans, packaging was adorable, I still have it (somewhere), there were normal flavors and the odd ones were carrot, tomato and pepper growing up, we spent the summer sailing ~ it was great, and there were countless hours between ports as my father was an avid sailor, and would not turn on the motor, even if it was very still... we spent a lot of time drifting, waiting for a breeze... I read at least 50 books every summer, I knew where every used book store was in each town on the Cape and Maine... bring a book... take a book... I would go in with a stack... there are thousands upon thousands of tremendously awesome stories... I just never read anything twice, except the Chronicles of Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings... until Harry, that is... and I was in my mid 30's by the time that reached the shelves... what impressed me the most about Rowling's stats, was the percentage of boys who were reading, and the high %age of those boys were boys who "didn't like reading" I went online to the official site, they had a list of names and how to pronounce them... I didn't know Hagrid wasn't Haygrid...

OK ~ you make me laugh... you could have trained them by now to roost on that shopping cart, and used that to go door to door... you could have been the head viking...!

They don't like it one bit when they see the neighbors come by for eggs and leave with eggs without even saying thanks to them. When I take their eggs I trade them treats/pie for the eggs so I am cool.

Hi all, thank you w4w for your thoughts. We are all safe here, I gave the chicks hand earners inside a pair of my sons gloves while we lost power. I lost two cars from a tree coming down, shingles off the roof. We have a leak on the second floor living room. Kids and chicks got scared but everyone settled down. Just hugged my Verizon man for getting me up and going today. Lost a neighbor sadly. I hope everyone has their loved ones. It's pretty bleak outside but the people around us have been connecting better. It humbles me greatly to see everyone reacting so well in my neighborhood. My husband left today since we had power, I'm dealing with insurance and repairs and only that thankfully. Kids don't have school for a week. Grocery stores are closed and gas stations are out of gas . I've been letting anyone come to my house and charge batteries etc. If you have family in the north jersey area or near rock land county ny who need anything email me at [email protected] . I've got power and heat and plenty of food/ water. The good news is this is making me clean out ...we lost some houses on the river and I know the families will need a lot to get their lives back in order. Yesterday I was making huge batches of soup for people out of power/heat. We are very lucky.

safe wishes for all

Sallysec, so glad you all made it safely through the storm (except for your cars

)! Everyone must be stunned. So many lives changed in one evening. Sounds like you were well prepared and I'm sure your neighbors really appreciate you sharing your good fortune so generously.

This was posted on my local thread. Super silly and a little early, but it might give you a chuckle.

Hope all are well and warm and dry. Best wishes to everyone.

Sally, I'm so relieved to hear that you and your family are all safe, very sorry to hear about your neighbor... and all the property damage is overwhelming. it is incredible how people pull together during a crisis! during Irene, last year, our community lost so much, yet we all pulled together, worked together, shared what we all had left... it made the crisis, while extreme... liveable... the anxiety levels up here for Sandy were very high. so many people had just finished rebuilding and moving in all to have Sandy come and threaten. my brother, his wife and children live in midtown manhatten. they may have power back today, which would be great, they live on the 17 floor... bit of a rough descent and climb... as they can only carry so much...
these extreme storms that our country/world have endured over the last 2 years in particular are eye openers to say the least...
