Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I was still out with the flock when I took this pic... kind of late for us, but it was a great afternoon and I got the back pen completely finished with the exception of blocking off some of the roof ventilation slots. I need to see how/where the snow comes in so I block the right slots and leave the slots that don't let snow in, open for ventilation. the walls are wrapped in heavy duty (ugly) vinyl, but the walls are 6' tall and the vinyl is 5'... so I collected leaves from my yard and a few yards on my mail route as well as the compost transfer station - I surrounded the back pen with bags of leaves that I slid into heavy duty contractor plastic bags. no gaps at all on the bottom now! it's so nice in there... perfect timing, because we're going to have a big snowstorm starting tomorrow afternoon!

5 more minutes? one last grub!

she's shackin' up with Henry AND Red! (her choice...) except the fellows roost while she's still nesting with ALL of the babies

I took this about an hour into the storm which started around 10 this morning. it was fairly light and fluffy then. since, it's come down a little heavier and denser. 6" or so accumulated so far and the flakes are so tiny that I know it's not stopping anytime soon. oh, good! the plow just came through, only the second time all day. I know this because I called in sick today. I woke up at 3 and was barfing til 5:30. that's when I sent a text telling them I was not coming in. no way did I want to be out in this storm anyway. I feel a lot better, but exhausted, so I've just been chilling out, no shoveling, except a quick path for the pups, I only needed to rake away a circle at the Dome door, the rest are totally accessible.

Henry and Red are best mates, and they both love Gossamer. Red has the honor of breeding with her, Henry, of protecting and foraging with... both the boys get along with all the chicks and keep the young boys in line. it's been working out well to let them move in.

the next section over now houses these 5 plus 1, the plus 1 is Baby, Big Broody Mama's only son. he roosts on the wall that separates the two chambers, he goes back and forth as he pleases. he's bigger than all these 5 so they give him free rein, and he's welcome in the other chamber bc of his Mama's position. Tommy let Max move in and they are all quite content

the ladies of the Foster Clan are annoyed that I closed the second chamber off to them. they are used to having access to the whole thing. oh well...

my boy

and only a few of the hens haven't finished molting. most of them look so incredible... nice to see full beards again!

he's watching me and Brutus have a cuddle. he's always watching. I extend my hand to him, he checks to see if I have anything to eat and sidesteps away. I do handle him from the roost and he's very accepting. but he doesn't just walk up and demand it like my little man above... maybe someday

2 Eggs today!

Glad you are feeling better, Cheeka. The snow picture is beautiful. All the chickens look great, so shiny. That last little rooster is probably afraid of getting a whooping from Brutus if he gets to close to you.

All those chickens and only 2 eggs? Makes me pine for my first winter with pullets, so many eggs then! Are you doing anything for Thanksgiving? We are celebrating on Friday here at my house. Going to start cooking things tomorrow. Happy turkey day!!!

It was a very good Thanksgiving for DH and I. We tagged out with deer and we are very grateful. One will go in our freezer and one we are donating to the food bank and our elderly uncle who is a double amputee.
The chickens love venison too. :)

That is great!

It is nice to be able to help like that.

I had a quiet Thanksgiving here - just me, Sweetie was 2 counties away, taking his Mom to his Sisters' place for the day. I didn't want to spread infection so I had smoked turkey breast and taters by myself. honestly, it was lovely. he's coming up this weekend and we'll have a mini feast.
we ended up with a foot of heavy snow, but the temps will be rising up to the 40's from Sunday to Monday, so most of it will melt.

1 Eggs today

Hugs Cheeka. DH and I had our Thanksgiving dinner in a casino restaurant. Yummy food. You and Sweetie can have a delayed celebration together. I am baking a ham tomorrow with sweet spuds, mashed spuds, stuffing, gravy and pumpkin pie. Too bad you live sooooo far away.
