Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

there is distinct peeping going on under Broody Esther! a gentle feel under the wings didn't reveal any chicks, but pips are great! she's certain to have at least one! Goldie will go out to her after I finish feeding and watering! had to dash back in to tell the peepin' news!

and no worries about Esther not being able to quit sitting after only brooding for a week. I've beaten her at her own game this time! she thinks chicks hatch in one week and always quits. perfect way to save those eggs I had to take from Cressa and Louise!

Thanks Cheeka...I didn't think about the apron....Glad to hear Goldie is doing so well.....hopefully she will fit right in with the others and always be "The Golden One".....

so... no hatches yet under Esther, and I think I should wait until she has a chick or two. this one needs to be up and about eating and drinking too much for her right now. because of that... I decided to try giving Goldie to Cressa/Louise.

I slipped her under Cressa and watched. Goldie stayed put for about 5 minutes. then she came forward, and started to drink. that got Cressa up, she came over and perped to show food. Goldie went. all was going great. another chick joined them. then another. then Louise got up. brought their 3rd chick with her and it was looking good. all 4 chicks were eating together. then Louise spotted Goldie. bout took her head off in one chomp. Goldie ran. Louise followed, viciously. I took Goldie out.

she can be the leader of Esther's babies. I'll put her under Esther at dark, either tonight or in the morning, depending on other hatches.

don't you hate it when they do that.....arghhh! it's like "hey dope de dope...we're all eating so nicely and then ATTACK!!!"
That's what happens with this new one we have, one min. she's fine then she's on Glady's like a tick on a dog!!

Hey all, I have been sick with a full blown cold all weekend, I hate block noses! :/ Got up late and decided to make some soup and sandwiches to make me feel better. I began carrying the soup into the living room so I could eat in front of the TV when I erupted into a sneezing fit, stumbled and ended up with boiling soup all over my hands and wrists. I got it off quickly but I still ended up with 1st and 2nd degree burns. :( Most of my hand stings and then there are a few areas where I have serious pain and blisters. So much for soup making me feel better. So I'm now lying in bed, I'm quite the video game fan so am watching e3 while my hands are dipped in water and I have an ice pack on my wrist. At least it isn't as bad as when I got burns from a frying pan on Pancake day.

Cheeka, how is the hatch progressing?

Goodness I sure hope you feel better soon...bad enough having a spring/summer cold and then to burn your hands just trying to feel better.....

Goldie is the chick at Esther's breast, the little brown hatched yesterday, not sure about the other eggs, will give it til tomorrow. so... Esther was delighted to take Goldie once her little one was dry. Goldie had other ideas... and ended up getting pecked. so, I waited until today. I slipped her under a wing, Goldie stayed put, chirped once really loud but was comforted by Esther's very soft response. it was lovely to peek in on. now, Goldie is all comfy with Brownie (not its name) and Mama.
I moved a lot of birds around today. the small broody/grow out pen has a terribly leaky roof. it's nasty in there, so I moved everyone out. after Interloper the Turkey left, Mama Gossy moved all her chicks back in and then I moved Gretel and her chicks in... so Gossy and company are back in the Dome, doing fine. Gretel and her babies went into Henry's pen, lots of bantams in there, and I also moved little Neffy, the new girl, in there as well. it was like they've known each other forever. I keep thinking I am hearing something, so I dash out to find them all chilling out and being mellow. so I've forbidden myself to go back out unless I really hear something. I'm so attached to that darned chick that every time a wild bird chirps, I think it's Goldie... but I've been listening to "her" for a few days... it's like an ear worm. she needs her Mama Esther, and to quote lindz "bless her little bald head!" for giving Goldie the life she really deserves!
