Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Reorganizing 'Oliday Greatness Everyone Rejoices

I got the new schedule for December ~ I have (not today) the next TWO Sundays OFF!

Yes they can be a pain at roost. I have 2 or 3 (same color and markings) that started to scrap in the coop, then an older roos got after them, which they ran from, knocking into hen that started to squabble and knck each other off. By the time they were into it, the main perches were empty and no one had a spot. I don't particularly care for their personalty traits...so its strike 2. One of the three has been sneak attacking hens and clipping their neck feathers....hate that, and chased the young pullets into the woods at sundown.....dangerous time to do that, now causing turmoil in the coop? Oh yeah, and one always clamps down on my hand when I catch him. Maybe that's strike 4. I have to overlook the biting since he's wild and scared of me (in that aspect he's smart) but as soon I find the sneak attacker he gone. Really need another coop.

Going through bills (notice I didn't actually say I was paying them!) and I see a bill for almost $100 for electric. I am getting ticked because I just PAID them, and no one is living at the other house. So I read and read, and FINALLY!!! In tiny letters I see "estimated reading".

Can you believe they are going to charge me to have the meter read? So I am not gaining much $$. How is that right?
Okay, done complaining about that. Next on the list is now that I am down to one layer, Penny hasn't laid her egg yet today. All is calm (all is bright. Round yon virgin...) so I am guessing she will lay soon. Just used to her laying by ten. Of course, I am not going to touch her egg because I want the other pullets to start laying. They are all 20-25 weeks old. Hopefully bating the nests will get them started. We have red combs, and interest in the nests.

I am looking to find 16 eggs in the next 24 hours!

I'll go one on that. We got a letter saying they are estimating electric since the storm all crews ae out doing other things than reading meters, alright fine...but they are estimating from the time everybody was here, which tripled what we normally use. Now we pay every other month because they charge a fee for phone payment...ridiculous, and we just got notice disconnect if not paid immediately, when they owe us money for sure. The service is just not there any longer. In FL I called them out to trim the power line because I didn't want to risk someone live trimming the tree...the said trimming wasn't needed, I got it in writing. 2 weeks later that limb fell and took out 4 blocks for 8 hours. They must have forgot maintain the right of way...all that portion of your bill, when hurricane Charlie scrubbed us, power was out for 2 weeks...crews came in and cleared and replaced rotton poles...they said likely your bill will go up to cover costs of that....but it was all paid for by fema.....?! What! They also stated on national TV...that they charge more for people who use solar to supplement their use...how is that right? Do you pay more for gas if you have an efficient car? Unbelievable. It was nice of them to let everyone know how they were charging illegal fees though....this all happened when the president was there to open a solar field. Jeez, you can't make this stuff up.

we get estimated reading here for December, January and February regardless of whether or not there is snow impeding their way... and it is always higher than my usual amount. I'm good, I turn off lights... and usually pay 60-65 a month average. a little more in the winter because the lights come on earlier due to dark, but it's usually only another 10 bucks... every year, and I mean every year, I get my February bill and it is always 500-700 bucks ?????????? I pay it, then I don't have to pay my bill for the next 5-6 months because they owe me. I complain every year that they are not entitled to an interest free loan from me each February. I won't pay it this year. I have written a letter with each months payment starting in October, so 3 letters so far, reminding them that there will be no interest free loan from this residence in 2013. I will call in my meter reading. They've written back that it is their policy to estimate... I have written back show me where in the 12 year history of living here where my bill ever reached 100 dollars, much less 500-700!
I don't deduct a lot from my income for taxes either, so in April, I don't get much of a refund at all from federal, and always have to pay state about $70. most of my colleagues THINK I'm nuts to not "look forward to a big refund" I just look at them and tell them, think what you like... You ARE nuts to give the gov't an interest free loan of your hard earned $$. I mean, if they even paid .5% interest, then sure... maybe I would... but they don't give you one single extra penny, so why do you sacrifice every month and go with less? the point is always well acknowledged, but they never do anything to change their habits. I used to be a stock broker/financial analyst/planner. I have excellent credit, yet have only 1 open line of credit, I only use it once a year, for 1 pair of boots, pay it off immediately. credit cards = consumer cocaine. one always feels that they have more money than they do in reality when they live off their credit... it's too easy to get swallowed whole and then the interest rates alone will bury them... I pay cash for everything. If I don't have the $$, I don't buy it. I buy used, and save the difference. I also pay half a mortgage payment every 2 weeks, so by the end of the year, I have made 13 payments, not 12. and if I have extra $$, I put it towards the principle. I took out a 30 year mortgage 12 years ago, and only have 8.5 years left before it's paid off... saved 10 years and tons of interest so far. I think I should be able to bang out the next 8.5 years of payments in 5 years or less. figure I've saved over 60 grand so far... just in interest.

1 egg today. from one or the other BR... i haven't gotten only 1 measly egg since point of lay.

Started a fermented feed bucket this afternoon, found unpasteurized ACV with Mother Culture in it at my local market... and will start a smaller bucket this evening with some chick crumbles. figure the chicks won't know the difference and should take to it right away... the older flock may snub it for the first few days... but they'll eventually get hungry enough to eat it if that's the only choice available. I'm really looking to cut my feed expenses since I'm more than doubling my flock size next week...

I don't have any stores (that I can find) that sell Braggs (or any other w/mother). I can order a case from Wal Mart, but I am holding off. I would just rather find a place that is local.
I am told (some article on BYC) that just water will ferment within 24 hours. Is that true? Also, do you put it in their hanging feeder, or a container that is cleaned/wiped out daily?

a health food store should have it... or a very good grocery that has a natural section, the ones with lots of Gluten Free food usually have it...

I'm using a 2 bucket "back slop" set up. a good glug of Mother ACV and water in the bottom bucket, top bucket has small hole drilled in for drainage... I put the feed in the top bucket, add water til it covers the feed, and stir. add more water if necessary as some of it drains to the lower section... just keep the feed covered. then I put a loose cover over the top, loose to allow some air to flow. According to what I've read, stir it 2ce daily and the first batch is ready within 24 hours. look for good bubbles in the feed, as that is the sign that it is fermenting. plain water doesn't ferment. but you can make your own ACV with apple juice and water and just let it sit for a month. Anyway, I won't pour out the used liquid, it's still excellent for creating many many more batches. just continue to add water as it gets absorbed or evaporates. some people find a bit of white mold develops after a while on top, they just skim it off and keep using... I've been reading the FF for meatbirds thread... thousands of posts... but the beginning pages have the essentials...

from what I've read... one bottle of UP/ACV will last an extremely long time. a small amount can be added to regular ACV, let it sit, the Mother culture will further develop, each bottle can be split off over and over... so you don't need a case of the stuff. One gallon is more than enough to last for years, I found a quart bottle at my Hannaford Market. I would order it online direct from Bragg... (UP= unpasteurized)

That is where it was mentioned that just water will work. SOMEWHERE in there. As you said, a lot of posts.
The health store closed. Her prices were 3X other places. No one could afford her.
As far as GF stuff, the grocery store has gotten a new section. Would it be in with the GF stuff?

I can't see how plain water would ferment alone. age, stagnate... yes, but not ferment... adding alcohol... or something would start the process... I admit to not having read more than the first dozen or so pages of the thread before I went cross-eyed... but I got the gist...
