Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Teaching #1son is hard because he is reluctant. Life would be easier for everyone if he would have a better attitude. He's a perfectionist and very hard on himself, so (what I think is) a simple hint or mild correction causes major drama. See why I don't want to drive?! But he really does want to drive, and he's actually doing really well. Hopefully before the end of the year we'll be done. By then all my hair will be gray, if there's any left, that is. Younger son wants to get his license as soon as he can. Yay! 3 years to go!

I know I'm not sleeping for more than a few hours at a time. Usually waking up 3-4 times per night for various reasons (bad back, toilet, hubs gets up, noise). How many hours of deep sleep do you need to not be a zombie? Lucky if I get 4. Summers are worse because we keep the house open all night and there's always something going on. Last night a truck raced down the street and skidded to a stop at the dead end. Lots of males voices laughing and shouting, something crunched, and they zoomed off. This was 2:30am and my hubs is away for work. I still haven't checked the neighbor's fence. Guess I will catch up on my sleep when the weather changes. Hibernation time!

I hope the driving goes well!

You do need more than 4 hours of sleep. Have you tried sleepy time tea?

Hello, people!! I know it has only been two days, but I have missed you so! My Internet went out. The technician just left. Unfortunately, he spent time surfing the net, trying to reproduce the problem. Meanwhile, I have limited Internet and wish he hadn't. Not that he used much... Anyway!!
So five girls in the pen, and Steven running loose. Two girls escaped when I didn't think they would find a hole, but they were easy enough to get into the coop. Steven was continuing to narrowly avoid being caught. Finally caught him, and went inside. After talking to an old(er) farmer I had an idea. But first two more girls were loose. I finally found the last one hiding in the pen. I put a square trash can against the pop door, and shooed the chickens into it. Steven was actually the first one in. They all ran back into the coop. The second time, I barricaded fast enough, but just as I was about to shut the lid, they squeezed past the barricade, and got back into the coop. I tried again, and it worked. The can is on wheels, so I just rolled them in.

I found one egg outside the pen and the two from the girls in the coop yesterday. I managed to find three (or was it four?) eggs today. Boy were they hard to reach! I put them where I want them to lay. I will check again soon. I also have to add bedding to the box I want them to sleep in when they are cold. We have had a cold snap lately. It is just today warming up From a low of 50* to a high of 87* tomorrow. Go figure.

I think they seem happy in the pen. Tons of grass, higher roosts, and new things to explore! I wasn't sure how to make it winter proof. Not sure that I do, but I have some ideas. I'll be honest. I still hope my "DH" gets himself together, and I am back on the road soon. In reality, I need to plan for the life I am living now, and prepare for snow. SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW!!!!!!!!

I swore.
And thank you for believing I can be a good thing for Jazlyn. I have started a college fund. Not much, but it's a help. $25/month over the next 17 years will be over $5,000. That can go towards books, housing, paying back loans, buying a used car or paying for her insurance/car repairs. Money is money!

Well MC, sounds like those chickens are giving you the runaround! Mine will do anything I want when I'm holding the birdseed container. Little addicts. So I have forgotten why you are moving them into the turkey pen in the first place. More room? Is there any sort of solid structure in the pen at all for winter? Can you make it dome-y like cheeka's?

Laid, I think.

I usually sleep like a rock. slept through hurricanes many times, and one earthquake. but when I was living on Long Island, a gas station in New Jersey blew up. 100 miles or so away. I heard it. woke me up...
now, living on the mountaintop... I fall asleep within minutes of closing my eyes, sometimes seconds... and I do not remember a thing when morning comes except dreams.

getting out of bed is another story. then I'm wobbly, and sore. but it's getting better everyday. coffee's up! I've got the rest of the weekend to myself with the critters and I'm happy with the 72*

The turkey pen has grass.
While the coop is 6 X 12 (moving a wall adds even more room!) and the run is 6 X 26, the turkey pen is 22 X ... I don't even know! 60 maybe. There is a covered done, lots of multi leveled roosts, an outdoor roost (where they have been sleeping) and more sun.
I moved them because leaving for a week means boredom and 35 eggs. I can't be sure I won't have a broody in the turkey pen. I at least think it's a smaller chance than the coop.
They spend time in the dome to nap during the day. They also hang out in the cool tall grass. I'm assuming (since they do nap inside) that sleeping outside has more to do with comfort than not knowing to sleep inside.
One egg found in the grass about two hours ago. They think because they are technically EE, they need to hide eggs. I'm going to look again in a while.

Yes, it is laid. I like to overthink things. It's a great way to keep myself crazy. :)

haha! I'm with you on that.

Too bad some of Jazlyn's folks can't return the favor and look after your flock while you're gone! I estimate they owe you about 3 YEARS of chicken sitting to pay back your time and money. (Although I know you do it for Jaz herself and because you are a good egg.

I think you sleep so good because you work so hard and must be physically exhausted at the end of the day. Bet I would sleep better if I was more active. My back has only normal aches and pains now and plantar fasciitis has calmed down, so trying step up my activity level. Stupidly, I fell hard about 6 weeks ago, tripping over a 3ft fence doing chicken stuff. Thought my knee and hands would be bad from landing on them. Nope, little sore for a few days, but apparently I damaged the rotator cuff in my left shoulder.

Of course I'm left handed. It's not too bad, but takes a long time to heel and is another thing to deal with. Going to look for Ron's SleepyTime tea today.
