Do not pay attention to that! Big combed breeds will have combs that look rooish but are not the best way to tell with them. Pink wattles early is a better way to tell.

Hope you're right! In the past, my hatches were mostly girls. I remember only one male out of twenty-something.
I only plan on keeping three pullets and a cockerel. Maybe not even the cock. My girls will eventually start committing to their broods (one of their sisters is on her second!) and I can pick a male later.
I now have two out, two pipped. The first egg that pipped only has a little bit more progress. The last to pip is going faster.

Yeah. Big surprise! She was supposed ... Who cares about "supposed"?

We all know it doesn't matter what I am told.
She is 19 months today. That means it has been one year tonight that my husband went after her... Nope. Can't just forget.
Anyway!!! She held one, but was too tired to be overly excited. She did hang over the brooder. When she gets up, the third and (maybe) fourth will be out. She can try again.

Heard some peeping from under broodies, but no other signs of hatching yet. I will leave them alone. (repeat 10 times!)


I need to put down my dying Wyandotte. Poor thing. Now I just need to find some guts...

Yeah, it is a mindset that needs to be developed. I know I need to re-develope it over the next four months. I'll have to butcher. That is easier than putting down a layer though.

it's quiet here for now, we had a smattering of snow, lots of wind and the temps are dropping! it's going to be a brutal weekend, but then back up to the 30's and maybe even 40's... I stocked up on goodies to feed them over the weekend to keep them toasty and busy moving about to maintain warmth. it's been colder, so I'm not too terribly worried.

back to the surgeon tomorrow to have the stitches removed. I hope to God he doesn't expect me to return to work next week. I have to be able to carry a 70 lb parcel to someone's door. there's no light duty. I can lift a 50 lb bag of feed, but I can't carry it far. and I can't do it twice within the same hour. plus, with driving my own car, I sit in the center and drive with my left foot. can't be torquing that foot 10,000 times to hit the gas and brake every day with the knee as stiff as it still is, but I can bend it beyond a right angle if I stretch first...

Isn't it sad that we can't make those decisions for ourselves. Those who take advantage ruin it for the reat of us. No way you should go back to work next week. Limp a little extra if you have to prove your point!

I went back up to the Seramas, just to listen, no touching, and didn't hear anything. Is it normal that they will peep and then not peep while inside the egg? Now I'm going to worry. Never should have gone up there!
