Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Believe it or not MC, I started out with the exact same size...legs and all. It is now up against the coop and the hens are using it for a layer box...it will make a good brooder. I like it standing on it's legs, for few reasons, less bending over, underneath is good storage, or can be another level. Higher is better against predators, you can build another story.....and it will be more stable upright. Just a few things for now.

I never look in people's yards. Really!
Okay, maybe I have once or twice... Going down my road. Which has two houses.

Yeah, I think we all do it. Heck! I spent too long looking at my desk. It is all I can do to not bring it outside, and add some wire!
Speaking of which ...

This is the coop I am working on. I really do want opinions. It is 8X2. If I stand it up, it will house 4 chickens. I will then have to add a ramp. The run will be ... Big. At least 8X10, but probably bigger. I will have an external nest box, and am considering keeping one side underneath sectioned off for storage.
Then thee are the possibilities of it on its side. No ramp needed, and that is hardware cloth on the bottom. I can add a door on at least one section that can be opened in the Summer for hot summer nights .... And days. I can also use the legs as a frame to extend the size to 8X4, allowing more birds. I will put it up on blocks to keep it off the ground.
So any opinions on standing up, laying down, keeping the hardware cloth (less staple removing!) or getting rid of it, and having a bigger coop...
Also, I have questions. The shed blocks most winds and rain. To keep this benefit,, how far away from the shed can I move the coop?
I vote bigger, MORE CHICKENS!!

Hmm, as far as distance from the shed, i would think not far to keep from losing the wind block.

A good local thread is an excellent resource. I read mine all the time, but don't post too much because they are all incubating addicts

and I am at my limit but enjoy hearing about all the different breeds. If I ever needed advice or new chickens, I could definitely count on help from these wonderful folks. I got my two Ameraucanas from a local BYC breeder and could trust the health of the birds. (Although STILL WAITING impatiently for the first eggs from them !!)

If you want to recruit members to your thread, check out the New Member Introductions in the Social section of the Forums tab. It might take a little time, but if you checked every day, you could invite the newbies to the thread you are trying to get going. It only took a quick scroll down the page to find this person from IL. They would probably love hearing from someone close by.

Hi, from Baileyville, IL

Good luck!
Thanks! I have grabbed a few off the old thread already. With winter setting in i have more free time, So I am gonna get it rolling! I will check the link out too!

Constantly. I have my own lumber yard and scrap pile going on. Seriously. I always rubber neck driving past the chicken people places. Why? Is that unusual?

Hehe! not in the least, I have DH doing it now too.

Good news! You know those Ameraucanas my mom (W4W) was talking about? well the older (we think) of the two half sisters is sitting on the nest right now!!! I'm excited, but W4W says I'm not allowed to see her on the nest 'cause it'll disrupt her. now I'm going to go into my room (which has a great view of the chicken yard) and see if she's off.

jchny2000 best luck for eggs.

that's all the clear shots from the last round of pics, 2 days ago... I feel like I've been in a time warp. had the lawn mower converted to the snow mover yesterday (it's a JD Tractor, with different attachments...) spent quite a few hours outdoors with the big gang, cleaned up the crate for the little gang, put on some music and found angry birds on facebook... that's it. been bug eyed for hours and hours, wiping my friends scores off the board... I've played angry birds on my teeny 3" phone for years... I have a 32" flat screen monitor for my computer... so playing the facebook version is like playing in a movie theater... I've got 3 stars on oodles of levels, 308 stars total, and I have only just begun... such a waste of time! lol BUT... it was nasty weather today, freezing rain and sleet, lots of wind, so no free ranging... and I haven't done "nothing" all day in probably never. I can't think of a single day where i did nothing. it was boring, fun for one day... but it's 8pm and I'm still in my pj's. sheesh... lol

Oh cheeka they are precious! So fluffy, they are growing so fast! Hehe, you needed a day like that and probably a few more, good for you!
Is that a 790 john deere compact, if so I love ours.. We got a bunch of PTO stuff for it. I still want the tiller, and the backhoe attachments but they sure are pricy. We got the 4X4 version and its great for pushing snow.
