Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

MC, if you had to, you could probably find someone near who sells fresh eggs.

Ron, I have so many older hens molting now, lucky if I get any eggs at all, but you just made me think one of my new pullets might be laying. An Ameraucana hen has been laying pretty steadily, but noticed 1 of her eggs this week is a lot smaller. Maybe the EE pullet is laying! What are the chances the EE lays the same bright turquoise color? I would be really happy if she did. My other EE lays a grayish green. Can an older hen that's been laying regularly suddenly lay smaller eggs?

I have seen all of these things happen! Chickens are amazing in their quirky ways.

Usually in the 3 to 4 age range I will see an occasional small egg. And yes, EEs can lay similar eggs depending on what they really are. Some hatcheries sell improved Quecha that were imported 50 or so years ago. Those are more consistent in egg color.

I was just out looking at her. She's pretty red, but I will have to catch her in the act to believe it. Egg color would have to be a perfect match to the older girl. Probably a small Ameraucana egg. She is 3.

Wonder how Cheeka is doing. She has a lovely new friend badge, but we are never going to get to see it.

Hi All!!
MC, Duckling is getting so tall! and I'm wicked jealous of your flock.
W4W, great photos! I want those rooster decorations for my sunroom...

all is well, I came so close to buying chicks last week... but I have no place but the sun room to brood them and then no coop for after that.
Spring will come soon enough and I'm searching for a tarp garage frame so I can build another dome.
Meanwhile, Wrangler is riding regularly now, Watson is her horse for lessons, and if she keeps going, for rodeos and such. she rode English out east. she likes Western.

She turned SEVEN! Big party at Chuck E Cheese...

that loose front tooth was a ruse... she says it really was loose, but it tightened back up. hmm. I love static hair from the slide!

I have a new badge??

Hey, Cheeka!! :frow
Wrangler is getting so big herself! Love how she is getting so comfortable being with horses. I prefer western too! I am glad I had my English lessons, but c'mon! Western is sooo much more natural!
How are you and the other adults? Gosh, how are the pugs and cats? Have they played with the friendly snakes yet? I would love a pet rattler! So cute!

Glad things are going so well for Wrangler. She's late getting her teeth... same with me and my boys.

Hope you are well and gaining and enjoying your new home. Best news here is we got over 2 inches of rain since yesterday! Big relief. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a wet wet winter. Bad news here is I still have 2 Seramas in residence in the garage.

Still have not integrated the remaining cockerel and pullet with the rest of the bantam coop. I can hear Joe crowing out there now, but they will have to wait for the rain to let up before they go out. Should only be another hour. Absolute worst news is we have rats out in the storage shed. Working on getting rid of them, but they are tricky. Instead of poison (which I'm not using... yet) I wish they would come up with some sort of birth control formula. Up to 7 litters per year for Norway rats! All the ones we have caught so far have been babies.

yep, I'm gaining, slowly. I've put on so close to 9lbs since August, I'll call it 9lbs...I still can't eat carbs without getting dizzy.
window treatments are finally done on the house - I got to take the old sheets off the windows and hang them in the sunroom so we can spend time in there at night without it being creepy. actually, I didn't think it was creepy at all, it's a fabulous room now that it's been cleaned up. Wrangler didn't like the reflections, that's cool.
of course, the photos posted backwards...
southeast bedroom...mine

office and kitchen, I love the bright yellow in the kitchen...

entry to dining room and part of the dining room, the other side has all the crap I don't want in the picture...lol and a nice fireplace. I'll get to photographing the whole room soon.

entry to the "ramp room". so called because it has a big ramp on the other side of the door that leads down into the room. it's the original garage, renovated. it's a big space, eventually it will be Wrangler's play/craft room. right now, the rest of the unpacked totes and all of the Christmas decorations are in there... kinda messy. a little further down the hall is the main guest room. that's a portrait of my dad. I have one of my mom now, so I will have to move his over...

southwest bedroom, Oma's

Wrangler's room, well... her windows and some of the room. it's messy, but that's our work in progress right now. it's a very odd shaped room. it used to be the attic. it's right over the ramp room/former garage... but it's also right off the second floor's main hallway. weird house.

looking down into the living room. Wrangler's birthday toys are strewn all over the place.

my favorite spot in the house. the sunroom! it took a week to clean it up. it was filthy and kids had painted all over the windows with house paint. not the kind of paint that comes off anything easily. every window had awful, huge...crap. 20 razor blades, two jumbo rolls of paper towels, 1 bottle of Windex, 1 bottle of Kaboom and huzzah! as soon as Peri stops chewing and digging..., I'll furnish it. lawn chairs are fine for now, she's eaten 2 of those already and destroyed the cushions on the swings. (sigh)

The house looks fantastic! You've really made it a home. I am very envious of the sunroom. You can be inside and outside at the same time. I want one too! Love Wrangler's room. That's the one I would have chosen for myself... kind of a room / fort combo. Chester looks supremely content, but I notice he is not on your bed

and little Peri is a pill. A cute pill, but a pill. How old is she now? Next step chickens!!!
