Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hello friends. Work stole my social life. Want to catch up with everybody soon. Chicks are four weeks today. Roger has learned that big broody will babysit her chick and she is taking full advantage of the situation. Big broody keeps Little Roger at nights now so the devil can have her night life with her friends(roosting with them). I have a few pictures to share when I get them loaded. Miss you guys. Talk to you soon.
I thought maybe your social life was keeping you away from the computer!! Work is good; keeps you out of trouble.

Time to eat.
Little Roger
is the one looking at you

Pullet or Rooster?

I really wanted a Delaware hen. Am I out of luck?

I need this one

to be a hen

I also think there is a chance that the last one is a pullet. The Delaware and the other RIR sure do look like cockerels though.
You're really hoping Little Roger isn't your only pullet, aren't you?

even after an 18 hour day... she's cheery and delighted to be back! she's still sleeping, I hope she's not annoyed that I did all her "important jobs" this morning...

Cheeka glad they arrived safe.

Spider is dead...fishing and wolf is what we had been arguing about either way dead is better to me. I am unhappy with my girls right now...they made a complete mess while I was gone and apparently didn't want to lay many eggs. I had a coop sitter but I dont know...will work on that later. I have to be out of town for a wedding again this weekend and am worried about them.

JC....I am really sorry for your family, its tough to deal with loss and really so when you have to explain to the little ones. Sounds like you have your hands full on making it more secure and trapping.

MC...I am trying really hard to convince myself not to let chicken math explode as I drive right by a hatchery this upcoming weekend. I want BCM's sooo bad. I have 4 hens 11 pullets and 2 baby pullets as of current count. I got a dozen eggs in two days (***?) I was getting around 8-13 two weeks ago. Then the clouds opened up and just won't stop.

OK, I know you are busy at work, any progress on the build though? Best Wishes for a pullet (crossing my fingers). I had one hatchery rir that I swore was a boy because she had comb earlier than everyone else in my mix....turned out to be a girl :) so there is hope.

AL...congrats on the chicks....glad your skinny broody broke but hopefully her sister will stop soon too .

Everyone else....anyone waiting on pullets to lay?? I am interested to know who is waiting, how old they are, what breed?

Hope everyone has a great Monday!

Sally, I have the 3 new 4 week old chicks.... 2 Cuckoo Marans and the white EE... I figure it will be 22 weeks waiting. the lady wants to give me an Amber link, she is telling me that they are white egg layers, but the reading I've done... they lay brown.

Sally, we have a Serama pullet that is 19-20 weeks old. Her comb is not very red yet and she's still pretty tiny. If we ever get an egg from her it will probably be the size of a marble! We have to weigh her to see if she falls into the micro category. From what I've read, the micros are sterile. Waiting impatiently, but really hoping we don't miss the first egg while on vacation.

Mylee is so cute :) I hope my daughter wants to play with the chickens . So I have two to wait on my silkie and my faverolle.....I am thinking twenty weeks . Not sure if silkies have a shorter or longer wait.

Anyways I popped on to tell yall the bad news....I have egg eaters...Not egglands best thats for sure....Urgh. My father let me know today that he stopped by the coop while I was gone and caught three hens eating eggs...they ate shell and all and he just watched

So I have loaded easter eggs into the nesting box and put up a curtain. I already have blown some eggs before and I may fill them with mustard. I am so mad

because as soon as I put the colored easter eggs in the community nest box (not sure if that is what started this problem) Mary the Ancona whom I constantly complained I didn't get white eggs from.....she jumped up there and cracked one filled with sand open. She left right after.

I may now know why I never get white eggs. Earlier today I found it funny that one of my girls wouldnt let me clean like normal. She didn't seem to be laying an egg but she was all huddled in there...I noticed her tucking an egg (not her own) under her chest and making sure it was tucked tight. I wondered for a moment if she was going to turn into a broody..as soon as I put my hand out with some scratch she jumped up though. I think she was protecting the eggs though. Ive caught her a few times guarding eggs while others stare at her.

So what to do what to do? I felt like the old nesting boxes cramped them up...so I built them these larger almost shelf like community boxes...do I make them smaller or see if the dummy eggs work? I plan on collecting eggs a few times throughout the day now. And I might be speeding up that game camera idea. I picked up Mary after she pecked the egg and had a discussion about how I had been worried she had mites or some other issue and how I felt bad for her but now she was getting closer to being KFC if she didn't cut this egg eating out.
