Looks like you guys are squeezing in the fun between the rain.

Hope everyone had a good weekend and a happy pappy's day. I spent the majority of the day taking Belle to the vet and waiting for her to be taken care of. She slept almost all day yesterday, so i knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what until this morning when the huge abscess in her abdomen broke open.
sickbyc.gif
At first the vet thought she had inflammatory carcinoma, because the area was so bad and so huge and it came up out of the blue. No sign of tumor cells under the microscope though, just bacterial soup and no clue as to the cause. Moist warm compresses and antibiotics for a week, then recheck. Thing was, emergency vet, on Sunday, on Father's Day was cheaper than my (former) regular vet.

Sally, glad things have improved. The silkie will be ok as long as it has interaction with you.
SBmom I feel what you are going thru, all my BCM and a few assorted chicks were wiped out by a coon about 2 weeks ago. it found a weak area in a corner and got in. They are cruel animals and kill for no reason. I have one chick out of 12 that survived, a mix BR/GLW I call chippie. She has been a sweetie since she hatched and is still in the breezeway after the incident, poor baby.
The coon didnt get back out and died of "lead poisoning"!
AL thats awful to go thru, we tent camped in arkansas once and woke up just COVERED in the horrible things

I had creepy crawly nitemares for weeks after that! The Off with the tick repellent works ok, better than nothing.
Kian glad you & lil one are better, thats too funny about the egg! I caught my barncat playing with a guinea egg like a ball before!
Sully it is hard to mix new chicks in. I do a big group once a week. I feed the big coop outside, feed the new additions inside and leave them inside the coop. I do it right before dusk, Its worked out very well, and I only do a growout pen if they are supposed to be a separate flock... that has changed now too.
OK I am so sorry for your loss. I don't think what you did had any bearing on it, nature chooses the strong to survive. At least it had comfort from you when it needed it most.
Cheeka I am so sorry to hear of the flooding, but am sure glad your lil angel is back for a visit! I love the tropical oasis!! She has a precious smile

Reina mine all started to squat and crow right before the eggs started too!

I lost my 6 chicks last night to a coon. Had just put them in the grow pen yesterday. All that was left was one little yellow foot and a tuft of black feathers.

And my favorite Amercauna, Cherry, is sick again. Same symptoms as last time. I've decided to have her put down, since I can't do it myself, I am taking her in tomorrow.

Right now is not my time

I am so sorry to hear of this, I really can't stand the destruction from raccoons. My husband has been taking care of ours in our area.

I know its a horrible lesson to learn but glad your going to use it to make a better coop next year. I know OK has another board about predators getting your chickens...some very helpful information and some sad stories but everything helps you defend your chickens better.
Hi everyone! I've been MIA for a bit (double ear infection, followed by my 7yr old getting Scarlet Fever--strep throat with a rash-- and then me getting a severe case of strep myself! Loads of fun!). I wanted to share this though thought you'd all find it a bit funny:

I just this afternoon found this egg in the middle of my bedroom floor. Notice the teeth marks? Apparently Leah's (my daughter) little dog (terrier/chihuahua mix) went into the run, up the ramp to the coop, into the coop and nabbed this from the nest box, then carried it all the way back into the house and into our room. This is definitely a first.
My dog does this exact same thing if the chickens lay an egg out of the coop. My girls free ranged in the afternoon and one night my big dog maggie comes to the back door with her mouth open funny and sits a beautiful olive egg right at my feet when I let her in. She amazingly didn't crack it or leave a mark. It was a funny moment. We said she was our egg hunter. No idea where she found it in the yard.
wow! sad news SBMom! I hate raccoon. just plain hate them. when i was a kid the coons on Long Island were enormous, they are much smaller upstate... but they would take chunks out of my cats. everything I have is wrapped in half inch hardware cloth along the bottom two feet and skirted out along the ground to prevent digging... set traps. they'll be back.

Sally, I am so happy to hear that things are clearing up with no more losses! it's still raining like crazy up here too... I have kept the gang in too, they're getting stir crazy...

kian, funny pup... good eggshell to make it all the way without breaking!

we've had huge storms over the last month... so much rain. today we had a severe and sudden storm move in... and we're flooded. downtown Middleburgh is under 3' of water and I had to detour about 30 miles around just to get home. town after town with flooded main streets, closed bridges (the water was running fast over one little bridge... it was crazy!) and I was annoyed at myself for forgetting to charge my camera battery overnight and left it at home. not that I had tons of time to take pics... I needed to keep moving and find a way home before they all got closed off. everything was great at home, squishy earth under my feet, but the runs are dry in both the dome and the boys pad, next to Peachy... oh no... the roof collopased! it's nothing more than a pole holding up chicken wire and vinyl tarp... the pole fell down. but .... YUCK... all the rain water spilled in and turned all the straw and ground to mush! it was all muddy and quite gross. so I got out the furniture mover pallets that I use and hauled it outta there! moved the whole pen to a nice new spot... they're very happy, but my little pen sure does look like a circus tent!

15 Eggs today
This rain had to end...we went up to warrensburg this weekend to lake sherman and I couldnt believe we got a beautiful Saturday in. It was the first in so long. I luckily came home to a little dryer of a yard. The grass is so tall it needs to be mowed more than once.
Honestly I believe me picking the chick up stressed it to its breaking point. Probably was pretty fragile and not in the best shape already. The other chicks are doing great. Growing like weeds. Need to get pictures soon
I honestly agree with everyone else...it most likely had some internal damage done by the original peck and drop of the older hen. You holding it would be comfort and care nothing so stressing as to kill it. I am really sorry that you lost your chance on a second pullet. Now Little Roger has a good reason to go on a power trip at such a young age.

W4W isn't it unfair at how the boys get boring stuff compared to the girls? I was so excited to have a girl this past year...I finally got to browse through the other 3/4 of the stores that hold the girls clothing and fun stuff. Former vet because of the price difference? I know that feeling. Sorry you ended up at the emergency vet, but glad it led you to a possibly better cheaper vet.

Sad part is the silkie doesn't like me....Its the most standoffish bird I have. It comes out if I leave the door open though. I feel horrible for it.

Sorry for the HUGE POST....Hope everyone had an awesome fathers day.!

Bug zapper season is officially here. Roger the has learned how to get the bugs that don't fall out the bottom. She wins the race to the zapper every morning. Her favorite is the moths with one wing on and one wing burnt off and still alive. Almost as good as P.....I......E

Hatching chicks has been a adventure. I wanted a RIR rooster and all the Delaware hens I could get. Ordered 7 each RIR and Delaware eggs. Ended up with no Delaware hens. a Delaware rooster, a RIR Roger, and pretty sure I got my RIR rooster. 1 out of 14 is not bad.......is it?....
