Archie, with a little Peach peeking out from behind... his foot feathers are wet... and not quite visible.

Peach

it's raining, and of course, they have been hanging out in the 1/4 of the run that is not covered by tarp...
OK... i know it looks gappy here too, but i didn't close the gate all the way, and that can be seen in the 1st 2 pictures... and because I'm a knucklehead and did not close the gate all the way... they left when I was picking up the knocked over water bottle... they went right over to the other enclosure and greeted the gang. most ultra-thankfully, these new 3 are SOOOO tame, I was able to quietly and slowly walk up to them, and pick them up and bring them back. Phew!

I am hoping the rain will clear up later so I can take better pictures... but I am so excited to present my new babies... I have to PM Tina to find out how old Peach is, she posted last night in the EE picture contest that thanks to this thread, she has found a home for 2 of her boys and an EE x bantam cochin HEN. not pullet... so maybe later today, I will find a tiny egg????

Beautiful roo! I love his color. Peachy too (my choice in hen color) now here's a question...what are you quarenteen for? I know, everybody says, when you bring a new chicken home it must be quarenteen...but...here's my thoughts on it. You know the source and have seen exactly where he came from right? Any sick chickens at that place? No...I thought so. Next...he looks the picture of health....next diseases that are bad can be transmitted easily by air so if he's outside in your yard....transmission can occur. Check the poo, look normal, no weird color...no disease. Next a disease isn't transmitted until it becomes active in the host. He could be a carrier But not contagious. And it won't be apparent in a month either. Granted I don't know everything about disease but I did work in a human lab with microbiology for a couple of years..if they have already met your chickens....they are already exposed. So don't worry so much about it. Watch them, take lots of pictures and decide for yourself if he's healthy...looks so to me.

Great points you make ACW. So many different opinions you hear but yours makes a lot of sense to me.

Roger would have been back in Kentucky by now if you let her get out of there. Regarding the gaps you are well educated and I know that you know what to do. I try to help when I can point out things I see. So we shall prepare for a first egg celebration today?

Yay Cheeka!!! Those boys are beautiful, and since they are growing up together, you can have two. Lucky you! Little Peach is darling. I have a Peach too, she is a big Buff Orp and very sweet.

I agree with ACW about the quarantine. I bought 2 Ameraucana/EE pullets from a BYC breeder and discussed this with her. Her opinion was that since both our flocks were closed and healthy, there was nothing really to be gained by a lengthy quarantine. To prevent the really nasty airborne stuff, they have to be really far apart, and I don't have enough space and too hot to keep them in the garage 24/7. The other worries, like them being carriers or encountering a different strain of coccidosis, won't change with quarantine. My new 8 week pullets went straight out into the chicken yard with the rest of the mob (who were 4 months), though in a cage for a few days. Still haven't put the little ones onto the coop/run at night, they sleep in the garage. Waiting for them to be a little bigger so they can hold their own against the big girls.

The idea of them catching something is terrible, though. A woman on our state thread brought some really lethal virus back from a poultry show. She ended up having to kill most of her flock, I think close to 100 birds.

Sure did make me think twice about disease transmission. You've got to do what you think is best.

Here's a few pics from their first day:

Peach is checking out the little girls. Soooo scared!! Just got home. Very hot too.

Inspection by the mob. "Who the heck is that?" Today, much bigger, but still inseparable.

Can't wait to see more pics!

Yeah, those diseases are terrifying...really...even more so when you have them on the tip of your stylet...no flicking allowed...no one would dare to raid my lunch box at work. Best way to avoid disease, don't buy a discount chicken at a flea market...or eggs from someone you don't know or has no community reputation..or you don't know where they live. :) it just isn't worth it. Well I can see that cheek a has a closed flock now...will peachy lay a peach egg or a green one?

I thought about the airborne possibility too... the portable run is only 20' or so away... and they did get within 4-5' of everyone in the enclosure this morning the last one to be caught was nearby for close to a full minute... their poop looks completely normal, and they are eating and drinking.
they came from a fellow byc'er, wingstone... and her place is beautiful, all of her birds are beautiful, she's really into hatching and just doesn't have room to keep them all... it's probably safe to mix them... it's very hot, humid and off and on rainy today, so I wasn't going to let anyone out today... I brought Peach a nest box when I finally got home from work, and gave them the tray i used with the old gang for a dust bath, with a nice load of fresh clean dirt.
Peach got right in the nest, so... i think the stress of the long ride and new home might have thrown her off schedule a bit... we'll see, no egg yet, from anyone.
I have an easy and short day tomorrow. I will see what the weather brings and maybe bring them all out into the "range" area for a supervised meet and greet... Osiris is a show-off and Peach is a little honey darling, Archie... a bit skittish and camera shy, but essentially quite tame, he just like to be near his "brother"

now they are a lot drier than this morning, and look like they are settling in nicely... still can't convince Archie to show off his feathered feet... he's so good at hiding behind that tiny little bantam!
and I swear, they look at me like I'm from Mars when I offer food from my hand. they back as far away as they can get and if I reach closer, they turn their heads away!... but at least they are eating from the container

Its not food from your hand that they want. They want a pie. Those are some really cool looking birds. Alright i'll say it.....beautiful.
