Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Cheeka and MC, those are some awesome eggs!  Mama Serama laid her 3rd egg in 4 days. It's a bit smaller and darker, but still perfect.  I really want to break one open to see if they are fertile, but Mustacheio won't let me.

Cheeka, you have my utmost sympathy dealing with that heat. This certainly has been a year for extreme weather.  Hope you and your feathered gang can keep cool.

Speaking of weather, I have a weather tip for anyone living on the southern east coast:  Be prepared for a potential hurricane at the beginning of August.
How do I know?
My friend and her family are taking a vacation in the Bahamas.
So? you say.
Well, my friend has some sort of traveling curse that follows her around anytime she gets more than a few hundred miles from home (or maybe it's related to money spent?).  She's 3 for 4 over the last 15 years (Unusually bad weather in Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii - yes Hawaii)  They are flying out Aug 1st and make a connecting flight in NJ.
If I lived on the east coast anywhere from NY south, I would start preparing now.
Don't say I didn't warn you, but by warning you, perhaps the curse will be broken.  :fl
Can you jinx a curse?

OMG, say it isn't so!!!!
Here on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, not what I needed to hear just now, haahaa.
Leaving 8-1-13 for AK, worried enough about leaving the dog and chickens, and house behind with sitters, last thing I need to worry about.....! Been working non stop securing the pens (just had a bad flood) and on getting electricity to the shed and pens to keep them cool, it's been so blasted humid and hot.

My emoticons are not working right now, but just imagine me fainting and going Thud! heehee
OK, all together now, we break the curse, so say we!!!!!
Heehee, oh nooooo...... Chirp! LOL

Sorry to scare you CC, but it's better to be prepared. Hopefully the curse will be broken or perhaps the alternative curse kicks in (which also acts on short range trips) which is that one of her family gets ill or injured (minor) on or just before a vacation. Either way, the curse seems determined to discourage my friend from leaving home.

My sister baby-sat our critters earlier this month and there was both rain (extremely unusual this time of year) followed by a heat wave.

She did great; everybody survived!

Have to confess that I've been placing you in Alaska, not Alabama.

A mistake Cheeka would never make! Got to brush up on my postal abbreviations. Hope the weather and humidity calms down for you all in the east. Here's a

Cheeka, did you ever get any sleep last night or did you stay up doing chicken calculus?

We definitely plan on letting the girls brood, at this point I don't really have the time or space for incubating...even though my "little" scientist/chicken whisperer would love it. I was informed by DH last night that we are not allowed to eat the first bunch of duck eggs b/c he wants babies...I thought it would be easy to identify and leave be...but then I remembered the 10 pullets that he got from TSC are white egg layers...well, SUPPOSED to be. To top it off, the ducks like the community nest boxes...
I figure we will just let Fran and Half-Pint have their fun for now and hope we get a decent roo or two once these chicks get the eggs rolling.
nope... or at least, not much sleep... it was too hot. and I calculated 4 more chickens into my flock

and HERE they are! aren't they gorgeous??? the Mille Fleur roosters have magnificently feathered legs and feet and they are all exceptionally healthy in behavior and appearance. as for your hatching future fun...(chicken) pullet eggs don't often hatch, don't know if that's true of ducks as well, but you might want to just enjoy those eggs for now, duck eggs are fabulous, especially for baking super fluffy cakes... and wait til the eggs are full size for better hatching

"Mom, can we go visit Roger?"
I don't know, why do you want to do that?
"Cause Roger said she knows special things we can do that will change your life. We think it's good things."
Hmm, I'll think about it.
Welcome! and think really hard about it, then just say NO!

You might let them go but you won't let them come back.

Welcome HomesteadDebi. Better yet I can send Roger to you for a few days.....weeks.......years
you'll have to drive her yourself... ain't NO WAY any Postal Carrier will touch that one! I've already sent a blanket message to every PO in the country to beware of parcels marked "Not Fragile" "Contains Roger"

eh... I had to think for a second about AK... Arkansas or Alaska...
hide.gif

it's blisteringly hot and miserable. here's a shot of today's temp at 4:30 pm, when it's "cooling down"

Now think about the last almost 3 years. we have not had "storms". we've had "super storms". all of them. I do not expect to get through this summer without major hurricanes... like Irene and Lee that blasted the tops of the Catskill Mtns so hard we're still cleaning up almost 2 years later.

15 Eggs today, and my friend Ruth came along for the ride to Stillwater, NY to fetch the babies, we had a lovely ride with the ac blasting, capped off by a visit with the flock... she never held a chicken before... kinda reminded me of Mylee (so joyful and just had to give kisses)

I've figured out this much over the last hour...
the 2 new reds are cockerels. and they are bantams. this is either Rose or Violet... at 14 weeks. I cropped the shot for comb and wattle viewing purposes... but I can tell from the picture that mine are substantially larger than the 2 new birds my girls faces would turn redder if it was really hot out. but all the pullets of all the breeds were still fairly pale in the album from that week, the roosters tho'... blazing red like the 2 new boys. so for the time being, they stay here, I can't place them with a little boy who will get attached and then not be able to keep them. (his mom and grandparents do not want roos) tomorrow I'll research, I've done it again, stayed up way too late, but it's just too hot

Thanks! ;) (emoticons back on?) Yep, Alabama, going to Alaska, heehee, no worries on the scare...just have had to make up my mind to let go and...well, err...go!

Here on Mobile Bay, about 30 minutes from Gulf Shores Beaches, we've seen our share of "H" 's....kinda had us scratching our heads last couple years with the weather on the eastern seaboard...?
Weather has a mind of it's on, I guess. and is often times quite fickle.

:fl Hoping your friends vacation goes well, (our's too...:fl) and we all get through this blasted hot, humid, rainy weather this summer OK....

Poor Roger....

CC, hahahahaha! poor Roger? poor YOU! you have FOUR of them!

Yep, heehee....just trying to read myself to sleep...I just tell DH that this is my "research" time in the school of Chicken's For Dummies...:) thankfully the computer screen/light doesn't affect his sleep....oh well, onward we go my friend...so much to learn...so little time...

Wonderful.......It's 6:15 AM and I can hear a peacock screaming out back. I have no peacock. But I bet I know who is playing psychological warfare games.

SHE demands your services, NOW
It Is the middle of the night and I can't sleep. I keep thinking about chickens, silly me. I now realize that if a chicken lays about 4 eggs a week, and I have 21 layers at this moment, I have all the eggs I should!
Yeay!
That made sense, right? I am getting 11- 14 eggs a day now that three LH are laying. I have 21 contributors.
gig.gif
yep.... been there doin that. It will make you crazy! Up the protein and post pics of ROGER being placed in the soup pot. Seriously its the heat, my eggs are down too, only got 11 out of possible 28.
