Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

isn't it funny how they seem to run from the camera during a molt? poor nekkid Roger... I think it's just her bid for the broody pen... she's jealous of her Broody Mama sister...

Very true. I have to get a picture this weekend. She looks............ugly....sorry Roger

yeah... it's not pretty... and so many stages of ugly... BR Betty is finally filling in just in time for the cold, I thought I was finished with molters and then 1 year old EE Stella dropped half her feathers overnight. she's young so I checked her over for mites, found nothing, but she's got pins coming right behind... should be quick.

I totally blew it... the December chicks turned a year old. on the 2nd... I owe them a huge Pie.

PARTY AT CHEEKA's

WOOOOOOHOOOOO

Sunday Party Plan: my folks will be here with my niece and nephew, should be able to get some fun pics, depending on the weather...

party food: PIE PIE PIE made with everything I can throw in, I have ramen noodles, rice & pork meat on hand, I will sacrifice a bag of broccoli from the freezer and probably take a quart or two of millet... they'll love it, people food will be meat from the roosters I had processed. sometimes I miss Si and Archie. but I'm happy with my decision... so that meat has been pulled out of the freezer tonight, I will slow cook it over Saturday night so it's ready to go on Sunday!

Hey, Cheeka (well, anyone!) I don't think I have mentioned this before. Sorry if I did.
When I cooked my first two boys, my husband said they were stringy. Now, I only tried the second one. I would not say stringy. I would say the pieces were long, and thick. To me, stringy would be ... String. The thinness of a piece of string.
Whatever you call it, I am wondering why? I slow cooked them, but they were only four months old. One or two have said that maybe I should try baking one. Maybe it is just the way I cooked them.
What is/are your opinion(s)?

so far, I've only eaten the smallest breast. Carl's... I sauteed it with garlic and onion powder. it was not tough, it was not stringy. it was not mushy either... I rather enjoyed it. I figured I would slow cook this batch mainly because of my limited time. I have to pick them up at the train station that is about an hour away, then another hour drive back home... so, it would be easiest to have the meal already prepared as lingering in the kitchen for an hour or more is a waste of precious visiting time... plus my nephew has severe allergies and we need to minimize his time inside... I did a major cleanup and will keep the dogs upstairs in my room... but I figure this: quick tour of the house, go out to meet the flock, and come in to eat in the dining room as I don't allow any animals in there at all... then back outside, weather permitting... and then we should go do something fun before heading back for an early evening train...

To me, stringy meat is chewy and gets stuck between your teeth. I have heard it's best to age the meat in the fridge for 3 days (or so) before cooking. Putting it into the freezer will accomplish the same thing because of thaw time. Other than that, I dunno.

4 eggs today and 2 egglets. A veritable eggstravaganza!

And it rained today! About half an inch. Woohoo!

Hope you all don't have too much trouble with the cold weather coming. 3 of my girls have decided it's cozier to sleep in the nest boxes even though I winterized the coop (covered 2 sides of the open vent area with cardboard

). The SLW and EE are the only remaining semi-bald girls. Making sure they get a little corn before bed to keep them warm.

Stay toasty everybody!
