Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I don't know what all the fuss is about us... we's Beautimous! and Adorifluff! no flock is truly complete without one!
yeah yeah... she just smells the feed that inside the boys pen, and is trying to figure out how to get in when she's caught...

so much fun today! temps hit the mid 30's and it felt wonderful! lots of sunshine and hours upon hours spent outdoors - best day in a while - I got a great night sleep and had abundant energy today!

5 Eggs, might have been one or two more, but I spaced out checking again at 5ish. oh well... it's going to be warmish again tomorrow, but snow showers, then like OK, we'll have a 50* drop overnight and into Tuesday, which will have a high of a whopping 0 degrees.

that dome is so nice - the waterer doesn't freeze! (unless it's below zero...) but even below zero, it's so pleasant inside. wish I had another one, the bachelor pen is nice enough, but it's not as warm as the dome.

Wonder if she could have got caught in or on something and in her struggle to free herself did the damage herself? Nail or screw sticking out? Piece of wire or hardware cloth? If your setup is that tight I doubt it was a predator. And with no one else missing or hurt it kinda rules out predator. Boys not yet old enough sorta rules that out. They stick their head in everything. I remember the first night I brought Roger home it was dark and I put the Roger and the other three in the coop in the dark. I went back a few minutes later to see how they settled down and Roger was standing in the corner of the coop with her head stuck between a cedar post and a piece of plywood. It kinda formed a "V" and she could not figure out that she needed to raise her head up before backing out. I guess she thought there was something in there to eat. I had to correct that problem area so nobody else got caught in there. However Roger continued to be a problem area and it was on from there.
that is what happened to mine she got her head in the fence and when she went to pull out got it on the bottom of the post, we have them fence post you hug the fence in the lups it did a good job took her out of the yard and left her in our old rabbit cage for two weeks now she runns around as if it never happened, i thought it had broke her neck it was down to the neck bone looked bad.

Quote: I thought that too. The hardware cloth is all outside, and still looked it all over to make sure nothing had poked in. I even ran my hands on the rafters.. and the ceiling! I hand painted this shed inside (well rolled lol) and pulled out any nails screws etc.. Its easy to find nails when you paint. I wanted to be 100% sure with it being for babies it was safe. I am sure it was her "brother" another NN and hatchmate, no less! I am sick over it. Was out there over 2 hours today just sitting in the coop with them. I was hoping he would be a friendly roo, but he was terrorizing my buff silkie pullet too!

He is now in jail. I have 3 of them, 2 older were freebees from a member of our indiana thread, and I have a hatched one from test eggs, about a month old now. (We all will ship to each other to see if our packing methods are secure.) We had not named her yet, just call her baby girl, so she has earned a name. They are night and day, she is just a sweetheart, and I almost regret putting her out now! She is on my lap again tonight. it still looks just awful, but i do not see swelling or signs of infection. She was chatting happily because she got her own mealworms and didn't have to share!

I got had today. I went and picked up a mixed variety of hens, all free. Very exciting, considering the mix will make for a gorgeous egg basket.

Now I know why they were free

One...single....lone.....barred rock. Ahhhh!!!!!!

I've had two other BRs, both loud, and always complaining. Got rid of them. Only to get another!!! I will attempt pictures later, of course, if she grants me permission.

its not too late, call your animal control and beg them to take it away! Just kidding, I love my Mabel. She has given me a lot of roosters but is just a sweet, funny, chatty hen.
All of her daughters are just as sweet and most of the roos have been too. She is probably one of my favorite chickens and thats saying a lot around here

Quote: good idea!!! and wondering how george is too?

Janet, sorry to hear about your little NN. Haven't had to use it yet, but Blue Kote is supposed to be great stuff, and has the added benefit of disguising the healing red spots so there is less risk of the others picking. It's amazing what a chicken can recover from, and your girl will be fine with all the TLC she's getting. Maybe the sigh you heard while she was on your lap was not from pain, but utter blissful contentment. You may have a new house pet here!

Beautiful pics and chickens Cheeka! And Happy 3000! So glad your mom and dad are recovering. That must have been a worry! Last night my hubs left on the midnight flight to China. Only 10 days this time, so not so bad, but we will miss his birthday.

Lots of bad flu in Hong Kong (including avian flu) so he has strict instructions not to breathe anyone's air!

We are having unseasonably warm, dry weather this early winter. Still waiting for rain. Few days ago, we drove out to Bodega Bay on the coast. Got there at the low point of a King Tide and the shallow part of the bay was practically empty of water. Wish I had had my clamming gear. If I hadn't heard about the king tide on the news, we would have suspected a tsunami as the cause for the water rushing out to sea, and headed for the hills!

Getting a few eggs every day. None of the Serama show any signs of going broody. Guess it will take me buying an incubator for that to happen.

thanks, she has been sweet from the day I got her. First out of the box, and on my shoulder! My DDs were very upset I had put her in the grow out coop even my dad was ticked!
My family wants to keep them all as pets

So she will be a housepet for a while now. Waiting to hear the right name to give her.
I really hope you see rain soon. Yummmm clams!!! We would feel around with our feet in the lake and dig up the huge freshwater clams when we were kids.
Got my finger stuck in a shell once, yikes that hurt!!! it was small so it wasn't a bad cut.
That incubator I know our friend patrick swears by, set and forget it. He hatches his legbars in one, guess they are difficult to hatch.
He said he is going bigger this year but still a brinsea.

Whoops fantastic news on the chick! if she is an australorp you will love her.
Clindz its not easy to "process" but gets easier once you serve that first meal.
I still have tears, and I am not a crying wimpy type woman. Its a very hard thing to take a life, but we are omnivores and need to eat meat.
Every one of my birds know I love them, and the time they have here, they are respected and well treated unlike the poor things in the bird processing factories.
Its helped me a lot to read about what is happening with our store bought food. What they are fed, disease and bacterial issues.. the list goes on.
I raise all of our food here except for fruit/veges, that's next.
I admit, my geese and my goats I cannot get past the "pet" frame of mind. They have been pets all my life.
They are watchdogs for us, provide eggs, and goats give us milk and excellent weed control

Lynda I bet DH is missing home a lot, awesome you can skype him pieces while he is away.
lindz awesome on the egg count! and hope everyone feels better soon.

Quote: i am hoping she will be ok. She is eating very well and still our baby girl! Not sure the fate of this roo yet. I will not have another one like Rebel, but he is still young.

That one big BR! and I love your flock just beautiful, any word on the fosters?

I am going to be getting some new chicks this springfrom lady I got the MaranMeans from. I am getting some Faverolles and some LF cochins. I may also get some cuckoo marans.
I saw the huskies again this morning and heard the owners calling for them. I am afraid that we are going to end up killing the dogs before it is over with.I just hope I don't lose any more chickens.

love the new little chicks - George and Astrid... Great names! in just a few months, I hope to have lots of chicks!

no word from the Fosters family. they have another week before their time is up and the birds are mine... not that I wouldn't give them back later... they just might not have the roosters to claim as they might be processed or rehomed...

lindz, I'm hoping you never see those huskies on your property again!

6 golden comets and 4 EE!!!!!!

We are expecting single digit temps with wind chills around -30! I gave everyone extra scratch tonight, put 2 more bags of leaves in the coop and gave them some warm water this last time. I will probably get up early and go throw some more scratch into the coop and keep everyone inside later tomorrow so maybe it warms up a smidge.... Highs tomorrow around 16F. BRRR.... Definitely not used to these cold temps! I could probably deal with the cold, but the wind is KILLER! I am hoping that Rogue doesn't get frostbite on his comb, but he won't let you get him to put anything on it. That rooster is getting to be a headache! Having a hard time catching is one thing, but pecking at me is a whole 'nother ball game!

Ratchet is getting to be full of himself, but he is pretty good about dropping things when told, and is doing well with sitting. Coming when called and staying are still pretty rough, and potty training is ok if you watch him constantly.... I hardly ever have problems, but the kids don't watch him as well.....

Zauk cut his foot on something this morning.... Not sure what or even how bad. It bled pretty good for awhile, but have you ever tried wrestling a 150lb dog, who didn't want to let you see his paw? NOT EASY!!!!!! I decided since it had quit bleeding to wait til hubby gets home to check it out.
