Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I checked on the girls and found 2 broken froze eggs . Both are from my. E Es. But they were both out next to the feeder. Any clues why they would lay outside? I am going to make curtains for the nest boxes for added privacy.

Jchny..... Oh no! My marans were hatched in Sept! If they wait like yours then I still have a couple of months! My laying crew right now are Golden comets and EE s. The comets are laying machines! Ok says that his are too! I think that 178 of the eggs last month were from them alone! I will recheck my numbers later to double check.

Ok, I checked my egg numbers. There were 178 eggs from the Golden Comets alone (6girls) only 7 days in the whole month that I didn't get 6 eggs/day out of them! The only problem is that they are going to burn out really quick since they lay like this. I should probably buy chicks to replace them because my numbers won't be anything like that this fall... :(

I have one that likes to lay hers in the middle of the coop before I get down there to let them out! Then I think they play kick-ball with it!
EWW!!!!

Quote: That's an excellent reason to get lots more chicks every year! My gold sexlink and Leghorn are still pretty dependable layers. They are 2 now, and only stopped laying during molt, although I did get fewer eggs during the dark of winter. We'll see how it goes this fall.

LOL!!! Nice to know I am not the only one with soccer playing chickens! My January total was 135 out of (I think) 24 girls. And they only were laying for the last two weeks. February so far is 65 so far. All the girls are still not laying again.

7 Eggs today and an Adventure Chester Style... I was working with him outside, off the leash... he was being so well behaved:

then he discovered the plowed part of the driveway! dashed down, across the road and into the neighbors field... I had to use the zoom lens... I tried to get him to come back for about 20 minutes, then I called the neighbor and told her he's running around - she said leave him be, he's having a blast, he'll come home when he's ready... okay... cool... and he did.

who's a happy boy?

who's a happy boy with a big bone??

Who likes belly scritches???

big deal... I gotta bone and I'm nice and warm and dry!

I love you Mom. thanks for everything!

ALL MY GIRLS LAID TODAY!!!!!! Even my pullet, who I didn't think was laying yet! I got 15 eggs today! My new pullet lays a blue/green egg, so I wasn't even really aware that she was laying! She was also my mystery pullet that I had no idea what kind she was.... I guess now we know! She'll be considered an EE I guess! On top of all the eggs I also caught the varmit that has been ransacking my feed building! It was a squirrel, and the hubby dispatched it when he got home..... Exciting day around here!

Cheeka, Chester and Ruby look very content! And Chester looks like he is having a blast in the snow, and warming up afterward!
Clindz, Love the chick pictures! Keep them coming!
MC, nope you aren't the only one!
Scrambles, I am thinking about doing curtains when I get my crew into the new building!
