A new laptop sounds great. My son now has a new one that is lightyears better than my refurbed dinosaur. But then all I really do is a bit of emailing and BYC. Hope a camera is in your near future. There might be some really good end of the year deals. It would be nice to see pics of your menagerie. How are the chickies doing?
Their feathers must be coming in a bit by now and soon they will be escaping the brooder!

I wanted to get pics every day.. oh well. They are 10 days old now, and all very strong and healthy babies. So far no losses, I couldn't be happier. So the Mt Healthy hatchery, I will use them again! My buff Orps are next on my list!
My laptop was terrible. Keys quit working and the mouse did too. Its all i had so i just kept plugging more stuff in to replace what was broke

We have a good friend that is a tech at a big computer company. He loves my eggs and my meaties made him a few meals. So he and hubby schemed up a laptop on our friend's discount. I had tears i was so happy. I do taxes as a side job, every spring so it will sure be great in another month, can't wait! That's what pays our annual camping fees and gets the boat permits so i can go fishing

Oh, and buy more chickens!

Well its getting cold down here too.....down into the forties at night...,yeah I know....big deal. Actually I didn't want to leave and we are only down for Christmas with the gkids. We have an Airstream and lots of acres and a lake that the dogs love to swim and romp in....while I stand guard for alligators. Fun huh. I'd put up a pic if I only could, my signal is weak here too. Yes, I enjoy the liftoff of jets from the international airport just a few miles away....hardly need an alarmclock here....and the sirens! How could I forget the call of the ambubird? Oh yes, rush hour traffic, its all coming back to me now. Lol. However, am getting a great deal accomplished, and soon will be home, neck deep in snow no doubt. I know how Roger feels.

I am a bad girl. I have not been out to the coop yet. They have food and water. They have a cabbage head. The coop is built for 30 (at 4'sq/bird) and there are only 18. Is that really bad? And I am asking in all honesty. They aren't going outside, so opening the pop door just makes them cold. Should I just leave it shut until they want outside again, or am I asking for trouble?

MC, no you are planning ahead. nothing wrong with that. If they don't want to go out, why make them? (And you!)

MC the first question that come to mind is - why do you think they are cold? Sounds like a spacious coop so leaving them inside surely won't hurt a bit, we all have days where that walk to the coop seems very long way off. If its in the zero digits, they might stay indoors, but mine will venture out after a bit, even if its just sheer boredom. In the middle of a storm they just seem to quiet down a snooze through it. If they are huddled around with feathers puffed out they may be cold. For a short while its alright,but extended days of it will stress them, esp if they aren't eating and drinking. Fresh air is good for chickens with their downy coats on. Ultimately its your judgement call.

nice spot ACW! northern florida? I see regular trees... not just palms. that's another retirement dream of mine, get a nice camper, travel a month here, a month there... actually, the big dream is to get a small apartment in Italy somewhere, and winter in Europe... but that is not as likely to happen as a nice camper...

the chicks are doing great. getting quite big, and beautifully feathered. doing the chest bump regularly, and i cannot leave the crate door open when i change out water anymore. they leave. and they are very hard to catch! lol. I'm pooped out from a long day today, however, I may be up for taking a few pictures, otherwise I will take some tomorrow after work. easy day tomorrow...and only 2-4 more inches of snow are predicted.

I got home a few minutes past 4 this afternoon, went straight to the dome to see if anyone wanted to venture outside into the plowed side yard, but I had no takers. I got a big ham and cheese sandwich at the grocer where I worked today (they have gluten free bread!) and it was so huge I could only eat half. so I gave the gang the other half. too funny to see them run around with pieces of ham or cheese and chase each other. I hand fed Peach and Si on the roost, Si seems to think that my finger is part of the food, he nips me with each bite, no matter how I turn my hand... it doesn't hurt, it's pretty funny. he really likes cheese, he was taking huge bites, it was sticking to his beak and he was making nummy sounds. Peach was loving the bread the most, but she had a little of everything.
there were a few Christmas cookies left from this morning, I gave them a nice pile of spaghetti and fish as well, that was all gone. as soon as I pointed out the cookies, they were gone too, and I got three eggs, first day that Peach didn't lay since she started.

I don't know what's up with me lately, been so tired, yet unable to sleep when it's time. last few nights I've been subsisting on 3.5 hours. hope I get back to normal soon...

It isn't that they are cold. I just meant that the wind is blowing in, and making it cold in there for ME when I am collecting eggs.
