Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Bubbles the pig. Because today I got zero eggs. Because I didn't have time to collect them

Bubbles is beautiful!!! What breed is she? The eggs should be ok for a day, unless your temps there are freezing, or really hot.

Well, we had snow today, and temps in the teens. I got some stuff done in the house, and looked over the new coop. I thought I could have it livable in the morning, but telling someone what I have to do still made me think it will never be done! I am hoping it is like doing laundry or dishes. If you mention each item separately, you will faint from the thought alone, but the actual chore is fast.
I should have pictures on Tuesday. I JUST realized that it will be about nine before I get home tomorrow night. Ugh. Well, I better get to bed. I have to do my best to get this done!
Ten eggs again. Starting to wonder about the number of oddities. Looks like a lot when you are cleaning, drying, and putting 13 dozen in cartons. Only about a dozen are rejects. And all the girls have been laying 2-3 months. That is not that long to still be a beginner, right?

That's what I do, plan to finish 1 part. If i get more done i am really happy! I have one hen (Spike, ugh) that will still drop pullet eggs, weird eggs that no one would dream of eating.. i think she would plan to lay any egg that i would not eat, let alone sell! She knows I love her too much to give her up

I must have missed one yesterday, one of the RIR's was in the nest, but I had checked late afternoonish... and there weren't any. this morning, there was one egg in the nest, nice and warm... because Si was sitting on it.

He made a lot of noise when I took it. There were six more eggs in the apple coop, and Si met me in there immediately. he hopped up on the roost and chattered away (we had one of "our moments"

)... so , 7 eggs = 5 for yesterday and a perfect 6 for today.

Peach is still resolutely sitting on her eggs. it's technically the day for the first to hatch, but it took her a couple of days to really start sitting, when I gave her the other 2, that's when she really got to work... so maybe a couple more days. I have resisted the urge to touch the eggs, I've seen them, when she feeds, and they look fine. but if nothing comes by say... Wednesday... I'll have to let her start over, if she wants to.

no snow at all here. hurray! we're supposed to get a little overnight, but we really dodged a bullet. chicks are in the portable run, making themselves right at home. they've been keeping up on the housekeeping, scratching around, fussing with the straw and the old leaves and the nice dirt... it's so nice to sit out there with them... they are such pretty birds. the gang are on the other side of their molt. new feathers are coming in, and they are looking good...
Awesome, perfect days are happy ones! I hope peach is successful, she is trying so hard. We have had a few warmer days here, and i am soooooooo ready for spring. This winter was the real deal and I am tired of being cold. We got our campground newsletter, so I am really ready to hit the lake and catch some walleye!

Here we go again..SEVEN

Four Nice Brown Eggs From The Comets, Two Nice Large Light Brown Eggs From The BO's and well........

.................One Of The BR's Laid A Egg. So Again Today..........One Short Of A Perfect Day.

Does anybody else believe this is .........possible?..... Possible reasons?......any suggestions? ......

She must want the new IPhone tell her its not what she is hoping for

My BR is an every other day girl usually. sometimes she will surprise me but not often. If they aren't able to free range the production drops fast, that much i have seen when i get real busy with moms Dr appointments etc. MY EE is doing every other day too!

I was just about ready to rehome her, give her away. She has realized I won't hurt her and actually will take mealies from my hand now. The 2 CX have yet to lay. I think i can say they aren't going to by now, they are 7 months old, still alive and HUGE. The DD's aren't gonna like it but the poor birds need to move out and into the freezer, the poor things, they almost waddle.

Three days in a row of getting 4 eggs every day. I have four 27 week old pullets (two New Hampshires, two Cuckoo Marans). They are laying every single day! The only day missed was a day where we went from 68 one day to 48 the next. That threw them all for a loop. I got one egg that day (very early, I think it was a hold over from the day before), then the next day 3 eggs. Since then, 4 a day! WHOOOO!!!

I have three 22 week old girls also. They like to watch the older ones, and they walk around the nest boxes. I can tell who's gonna be next, but I think we're a couple weeks away still. All New Hampshires. No Barred Rocks, Sorry Roger!

Hi Kian! I think I saw you on the Northern CA thread. Congrats on the eggs! It feels good, doesn't it? I have a hatchery NH and she is a great layer. Her egg is very round and has a thick bloom that makes it look pink. How dark are the eggs from your Cuckoo Marans? It's funny that the barred rocks aren't called cuckoo. Maybe Roger could be the first official Cuckoo Rock!

Thank you! All of my birds seem to be HQ so that is probably why they are such frequent layers! (I got them from a local ranch). My Marans eggs are dark but not that darrrrrk brown :( I'm kinda bummed about that. One of my NH's eggs looks almost pink too, which is fitting as her name is Rose!

I think the copper Marans lay that really dark color. Do you know about the blues? So pretty, but not sure of egg color. I have a Welsummer that lays a rusty speckled egg, but I like barred birds, so wondered about the cuckoo Marans. My one BR, Spot, is an infrequent layer (taking lessons from Roger) but she has such a fun personality, that I can forgive her.

Honestly I knew nothing about Marans until I got these. I have since heard that its the Coppers that lay the chocolate eggs. These are pretty though. One laid speckled eggs the first two times but now they are just brown. They do look pretty next to the NHs eggs too.

Blue Marans are so pretty! I'm developing a soft spot for blue chickens and have none! Funny that :p

awww AL...that is so cute! I have a box of dog biscuits in my car, and leave a biscuit in the mailboxes of several families. the dogs know... they start woofin' when they hear my car (and it's a fairly quiet car...) they want that special delivery!

I had 4 eggs, but again, one had a thin shell which broke when I picked it up. time for a side of calcium... it's Wilma's egg... everyone else's eggshell is fine. Peach is still sitting, no chicks yet. I'm thinking they were duds... and I will set aside a few fresh eggs for her tomorrow. the boys are all young, could be they are not yet fertile. I haven't really noticed any bull's eye in the yolks...

so, I had the gang outside for a bit this afternoon. I opened the door to the portable run to see what would happen. the chicks all came to the edge, the beardless red stepped over the line, but went back in. that was it. a few pecked at the earth on the outside, but they did it from the inside. they wouldn't cross the line. the boys noticed, they were dancing around, crowing... and showing off their beautiful attributes. I was annoyed with myself for not bringing the camera out. just to get pics of the boys would have been cute. I also noticed some golden feathers coming in on one of the dark black and whites. her breast is feathering in with golden red.

I have to work OT again this week and next week. I'm draggin' my hiney as it is... oh well. my paychecks have been great. the house is a mess again, and I don't see myself zipping around to do a whole lot, but I'll keep up with the worst of it... I'm sure I could have gotten a few chores done instead of taking the birds out, but the birds were so happy, and it was so pleasant... The HECK with the chores!
