Love the little penguin one! The middle one has little white marks under the eyes. So cute and you can tell them all apart.

So there's no way to tell a frizzle at this stage, I guess.

I don't know frizzle genetics, but the parents of this chick were smooth.

My understanding is that Frizzle is a dominant gene. If both parents were smooth, then your chick wouldn't be frizzled. One parent must be frizzled and both parents cannot be frizzled or apparently there are problems. I am just barely starting to touch the surface of the whole frizzle thing though, so take my words with a grain of salt.

Haha! So he's just frizzy, then. Maybe lovely smooth feathers will grow in after the first molt. I hope you post pics of yours as they grow so we can see how the feathers come in. I particularly wanted smooth because I think it keeps them warmer. These guys are not good in the cold, and I want to keep them outside.

I also heard that you should not breed a frizzle to another frizzle. Must be a lethal gene or something.

She has laied an egg a day for the past three days and they are getting darker every day! I couldn't find a Wellsummer chick anywhere close by so we have two cuckoo Maran chicks about 4 weeks old,..it appears that they are the same gender....hopefully hens.

If they are light grey they are boys, black or much darker grey, girls. I know this from (a bad) experience!

I have news...I hatched three frizzled EE last night. So excited! They are all black and one has penguin markings. I moved them into the brooder tonight. So precious!

Awesome!! and the pics you posted are wonderful, doesn't matter that the background is washed out, the chicks are so so so cute! it's nice that they have such distinctive markings early on. I lost track of who is who in lots of my pictures, there are only a handful that are truly recognizable.

W4W, he's still so cute, frizzy or what... but it's a good bet that he'll smooth out. would extra protein make a difference to his feathers?

we are having our first real Spring-like day! and lots of snow is melting away!
I took Peach and her baby outside! it's in the mid 50's and just as warm as in her room, especially when the breeze stops ... they had a blast! lil Peep is a great forager, it was digging up worms and grubs so well, Peach started stealing them right from it's beak! lil Peep got plenty... a comparison.................
the White bird is just 16 weeks old. in this shot of Isis, she is 21 weeks old. the Wee gang is developing faster than the original gang did. they are as large now at 16 weeks as the big gang was at 22 weeks. their combs are bigger and pinker... I might not have to wait another 10 weeks for eggs!
