Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I'm getting "error uploading images" for all of my pictures except for this one... Jackson! one week old! I think he's "tootin'" as Mylee would say... babies one week old don't "smile"... it's usually gas... but I'll take it! such a snuggly baby!

yeah W4W really cool pics! and OK, Congrats on the broody! want me to send you some eggs??? speaking of eggs... I just got home, and there was only 1 egg. ONE. and you'll never guess who laid it! Peach! her first egg in months. it's so beautiful... and the tiny chick was way up on the roost in the portable run...! not sure what route it took to get up there, could have gone to the top of the kennel cab nest to the roost above that, and then up to the top... but it was chirping so loudly, I had to recheck when I came out of the dome. it flew down as soon as Mama came out of the kennel cab to see the feat! I'm so relieved that they are thriving in the great outdoors! and I'm delighted to get my dining room back, even tho' I never use it for that, the laundry machines are in there, so to cut down on the dust will be great!

the big gang was given enough food to last til tomorrow, yet there was nothing left. Pigs... and I got zero eggs for all that feasting. they are probably hidden, I did look in the spots I've found them in before... I'll look again in the morning... with the major melt over the last few days, they are eager to get outside every moment, stinks that I have a long day tomorrow. and no Mylee

but they decided to come back on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, and now I just this second got a phone call to ask me what time I could pick them up if they come back tomorrow...
celebrate.gif
long day or not... I will make the drive to the city to collect them! I only have one more week with them... and then it's a few months before they come back. if I can, I'll get some pics posted tonight.

So glad to hear you get more time with Mylee! How are you feeling? Got the sniffles? Upset tummy? Maybe if there's a nice day this week you can call in sick.

About the lack of eggs, is it possible that something is eating them? Maybe some sneaky rats? A possum? Or it could be that the introduction of the wee gang has caused a bit of stress and a production slowdown. Chickens are funny that way. They like their routines. They better get in to gear though, for when Mylee gets back so she can continue with the cooking lessons.

PS. Jackson is sweet.

So here is the plan. I have a dozen hatching eggs on the way. All RIR. The goal is to end up with one rooster and maybe two hens. I want Delaware hens too. With the combination of RIR/ Delaware I can get Red Sex link birds and RIR/ BR I can get black Sex Link birds.Debating how many RIR to give to the broody. Would love to find a few Delawares to put with the RIR eggs. Any suggestions? I know build a bigger coop.

Sounds like a good plan. I would set all the eggs if she'll take them. You never know with shipped eggs how scrambled they can get and how many will hatch. You can sell any extra chicks. Are they heritage RIR? If there is someone local with Delawares, you could get the eggs in time to set with the others. Is there a Kentucky thread, or a Delaware thread where you could ask?

If you ever do get the chance to come out, let me know and we will show you around. That goes for any of you!

New plan. I bought six RIR and six Delawares from a guy in Tenn this morning. He says they are heritage. Now I have to find somebody who will buy the dozen RIR eggs for $16.00. Anybody interested...lol

Thanks, that would be awesome! Ron lives in Vallejo (?) I have NEVER been out that far west. DH promises someday.. hope we can.
My cousin lives in Vallejo! I used to live about 20 minutes east of there and we visited often (there is also a Marine World there). Now I'm down in Los Angeles. Small world huh.

You mean ronott? (Ron Ottman, heart and soul of the California - Northern thread and supreme incubator enabler)? He lives in Woodland, which is about an hour northeast of Vallejo. Oooooh, if you came, we could go on a chicken tour and check out all the cool birds.

Forget the Golden Gate and the redwoods and the wine country, we could make it all about fowl!!!

Seriously though, late Sept- mid October is the best time of year around here. Save your egg money!!!

Sounds like another good plan. I shied away from the RIRs at the feed store because so many folks reported that they can be aggressive. Heritage RIR have lovely calm temperaments and are a unique dark brown color with a different boxy shape - very flat backs and low tail set. I tried to get a Delaware, but brooder mix up got me a changeling Leghorn.

Serious breeders tend to have nicer birds because they eat the mean ones.

You could craigslist the extra eggs. Chances are there's a hatch-a-holic or two nearby. Or make a very 'spensive omelet!
