Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

hey all! what a day! long route, so long day, but the weather was spectacular and i got home early enough to let the chickens out while I waited for Mylee to get home. they took the bus back, the train was too long, 8 hours! they go all the way down to NYC and then back up, so it's double... the bus was under 4 hours to Albany and I have friends who are dying to see them so they picked them up and brought them home, so nice... Mylee was so happy to be back with her Cluck Clucks!

I did find the new nest, complete with 8 eggs, in the back corner of the dome... all intact and pretty clean, and Peach laid another today, so i have 9. well... 7, Mylee ate 2. and she did all the cooking. AND! this kid is so amazing... I open a word processing file so she can "push buttons". she likes to play on the keyboard and see the monitor fill up with her "work". every now and then, I change the font color for her... so while my friends were still here visiting, completely amazed with her cooking skills... she asked if she could push buttons. I set her up, and then asked her what color she wanted. she said she would do it. I said "teamwork", she said "makes the dream work" and so I went to help, and she told me "no, you go over there"... then she took the mouse, navigated to the tiny box for the color, clicked the button, scrolled to pink, and set it. I dang near fell over! she changed the color all by herself every few lines. she knows to stay on the main keys too... kid's incredible!

anyway, the only distress I have to report, is that my beautiful white gal got mounted by Si this afternoon, only to have Archie run over and grab her head feathers too, she flipped, they held on and the whole top of her head basically came off. it's a complete bunch of feathers on my mantle and she has a gaping hole. I sprayed her with blue kote, and she was hiding out in the apple coop, she should be okay... maybe I'll put her with Peach and the chick... I don't want to bring her inside. it's nasty tho', I feel terrible. I need the chick to stinkin' grow so I can move the boys into the portable run. bachelor pad. the warm weather has made them really randy.

Missing ACW for this broody venture. She was supposed to hold my hand thru this process. Just checked and its been four weeks since she last posted on BYC. But with all my great friends here we will get it done. The broody is my large BO. I also have a smaller BO. She has been glued to the nest since she went broody. I have yet to catch her off of the nest but she has to get up on occasion I'm sure. I swear she looks like a boneless chicken laying there. Flat and spread out over the entire nest box. She is the biggest girl I have. She will probably make a good broody. We shall see. Right now she has at least one egg and a golf ball under her. I stole one of her eggs last night but thought I might be better off leaving her with something to keep her interested until the hatching eggs arrive. I had to reach under her to get the egg and she didn't like it one bit. So I left the other egg and the golf ball. My first try at this but if I understand right I give her the eggs and leave her alone. She will do the rest. Tips, Reminders, Advice, all are welcome. Should be a lot of fun. I will post pictures along the way as well as updates. If I end up with another ROGER I am officially out of the chicken business and will do my best to buy a KFC franchise so when I serve chickens it will be appreciated and nobody will poop on me

no one might literally poop on you... but IMHO, KFC is sh*tty work... but honest work... so I should just shut up.

let her sit on something definitely. then, when the eggs arrive, that night, take the egg and the golf ball away, slip the eggs under her and voila! wait roughly 3 weeks, and see what happens. with Peach, she got off the nest once a day. she ate quickly, drank a bunch... made one enormous poop and went right back. that's it. when the chick hatched, she got up 2ce a day, for 2 days, until she gave up the other 2 eggs. she never pooped in her nest. she only made that one giant poop a day. and I mean GIANT. for such a little bird, it was easily 2ce the size of her eggs. even tho' she is laying again, she is not interested in sitting on them, she is still rearing her chick. I have great new pictures but I'm still getting the error uploading message. very annoying. if I have to, I will set up the lap top tomorrow when I get home from work. then Mylee can play on the desktop too... I am so wiped out... but it is so worth it! seeing Jackson was incredible, watching Dana being such a confident Mother... her son. I could cry...

ETA, Peach would be flatter than a pancake on the nest, it's really cool... good coverage... so if your BO is good and large, she can handle lots of eggs

I'm sure you are enjoying the grandkids. Our situations are very simular. I can relate. They grow in leap and bounds when you don't get to see them often. Five visits ago I was holding a baby just a few hours old. Now he is two years old.

I guess I need to separate them from the rest of the flocker's....so they don't eat the chicks? I can see somebody getting their neck wrung

Quote: Thanks, that would be awesome! Ron lives in Vallejo (?) I have NEVER been out that far west. DH promises someday.. hope we can.
You mean ronott? (Ron Ottman, heart and soul of the California - Northern thread and supreme incubator enabler)? He lives in Woodland, which is about an hour northeast of Vallejo. Oooooh, if you came, we could go on a chicken tour and check out all the cool birds.

Forget the Golden Gate and the redwoods and the wine country, we could make it all about fowl!!!

Seriously though, late Sept- mid October is the best time of year around here. Save your egg money!!!
hehehe! Ron verzon, its the USAF friend. He is a sweet man, we have spoken on the phone several times. If we ever can go out I will let you know way in advance!

Quote: it sure is! DH has known Ron well over 20 years, I am really hoping to go out there someday.

New plan. I bought six RIR and six Delawares from a guy in Tenn this morning. He says they are heritage. Now I have to find somebody who will buy the dozen RIR eggs for $16.00. Anybody interested...lol
UGHHHH... If I had it to spend I would, I've been interested in them, I am sooo overbudget my checkbook is squealing

I promised myself not to buy any more till I sell off some chicks

Cheeka, you are so fortunate to have this time with them. It really touches your heart to see your babies grow up and become parents themselves. I can't wait for grandbabies, My oldest, and her life choices, its just not gonna happen... My youngest is playing it smart, her and my SIL to be are waiting til they finish school to marry and start a family. I am glad they are planning ahead
