Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Nice eggs. Sorry your friends blew you off, but glad you are able to "make do".
I have a question. While I get that eggs get lighter as the laying season goes on, I am wondering if 6 mos. in they should be so pale? My RIR eggs are as dull as my BR.
I keep looking in the incubator expecting chicks. I guess I am not going to be as patient as I thought.
21 hours down. 20 days to go!

hmmm... MC, I really don't know. my BR's lay a cream colored egg, and the RIR's lay brown. the brown will vary slightly from day to day, or really... between the 2 RIR's, one lays a darker egg and one is slightly lighter, but neither are as light as my BR;s.

This is the chick order! They ship the 22 of this month!

Sounds like a nice variety, I can't wait to see your dark brahmas...I have a wedding to go to later this year and I will be driving right by the hatchery....motorcyclechick I may need some zip ties for my mini van...they will have to tie on the luggage rack lol
I haven't had a store bought egg since last summer when mine started laying. The memory has faded. Maybe I'll go buy a some to compare. Do a blind taste test! :sick I have heard about the cayene flakes. Did you try it? Did it work? Also supposed to be healthful in other ways.
So I gave my girlfriend her first dozen eggs and she was like wow they are so much stiffer and firmer....she doesn't know about taste tests and now wants to try an old egg and one of these side by side lol...she can't remember she says. Cheeka your eggs are so beautiful....I want blue eggs so badly...my EE are olive eggers....and I got six eggs...which seems to be the norm now. Still no whites...my BR lays a brown egg...I only know because she takes forever in the nest box and I wait til she is done and its still warm. I really have caught four different girls in the box now and waited for the thump of a new egg....then there is a new egg laid outside the box and its weird colored...like someone half painted it. I'm about to section them off to see who is doing what.

it's blustery, it's cold, it's going to rain. the boys are not covered for rain yet... will have to wait til I get home from work, they'll survive but I feel bad, they are looking for their girls, the older girls are looking for them... but truly, it's exceptionally peaceful in the dome this morning. the older girls are abused by those boys repeated and sometimes triple team mounting... yesterday, poor Isis just stayed in the squat position even tho' the boys weren't there anymore! it was bad yesterday... gave me a glimpse of what was to be if I don't correct this now... I want to keep a blue egg gene boy... and Si probably doesn't have even one copy... he doesn't have a pea comb, he was hatched from a tan egg... I have no knowledge of Archie's hatch egg color... I want to keep 2 of them. I have sent a message to a friend re help dispatching... Si and Royce would be the best choices for breeding. those 2 do NOT get along. oh I don't know.

thanks SS, I have a small container with shell fragments, I want to do an art mosaic piece...

Cheeka, what about crooked Carl? Do you have any pics of him?

Sounds like your boys are feelin' the springtime!

MC, getting quite a lot of variation in egg depth of color here too.

I know the amount of carotenoids (in leafy greens and yellow/orange veggies) can affect the color of the shell as well as the intensity of the yolk, so it might have to do with getting a lot of a certain type of treat. For mine, it might be the weather. They spent more time hiding from the wind than mowing the grass.

they had ducklings at Crewell's (Cree-Wells) feed supply... so cute, I was strong... I resisted... but I thought of how much Mylee would love duckies!

so here's my day:

I stopped to Smell the Flowers

Communed with Cows

Hung with Horses

Lounged with Llama's. (Associated with Alpaca's?)

for temporary arrangements... I divvied up the kennels and put one boy in each section. it's messy... but functional.

I had to put up tarps inbetween as well, even tho' there is fencing there, the boys would spar between the chain link. so I made it difficult for them to see each other.
My friend "Handy Andy" will come over tomorrow to brainstorm a more structurally sound divider.
