Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

So last week I was up at the garden watering because it was so darn hot, and whilst watering the fig, a large king snake slithered by within inches of my big toe. Haven't seen a snake in the yard for some time, thought the dogs chased them all out, so I was happy to see one there. Shortly after it snaked out of site, there came a small scream-like squeak of rodent horror. No, I thought, it can't be. Finished watering and put the hose down to go see what was up. Not surprisingly, I couldn't find anything, but attracted by the distress squeak, Scooter came over to look too. Very quickly he alerted to a particular spot, sniffed, and backed away. Target located. I parted the tall grass weeds, looked down, and saw.... the bulged out eyes of a very dead little field mouse. Coiled around it was the king snake. Couldn't see it's head, but it noticed me and stopped devouring said rodent, so I left it in peace and watered the pear tree. (After, of course, racing back to the house to grab the camera to get a pic!)

Checked on it a little later to see the last part of the head disappearing down the snake's mouth. (No good pic opportunity.) Then it gave me a glare and disappeared into a hole that was right there. Sneaky snake!

Back to watering I went, little knowing that my reptilian adventures were not over. Went to go take care of the climbing rose that had been blown down in the wildfire-inducing hot high winds that we had been having. I propped up the rose and retied what was left of the broken makeshift trellis, put the water on and decided some serious pruning was in order. Merrily snipping away, I was following a cane back down the maze-like tangle of rose stems, and was confronted by yet another glaring reptile... the biggest alligator lizard I have ever seen! Had to have been over 8 inches long, and it was not happy being awakened from it's nap. It was even less happy when I started prodding it with a stem to move it into a better position for pics! Very glad I had been wearing my anti-thorn gloves, because when these guys decide to go after you, they have an uncanny ability to grab the fold of skin between your thumb and forefinger, and no amount of flailing and shaking will get them to release. The lessons of childhood are hard earned!

"Go away."

This concludes our interspecies interlude. Now back to chickens and all things fowl.

Here are the latest pics of the Serama chicks. They are about 10 weeks now. Female is still pale. Hope she starts laying before we go on vacation. Hate to miss the first egg!

The happy couple. Donut is getting more color every day. Coffee has a longer tail (for now) but she is smaller.

One more not so good pic to show size compared to the big girls.

If they won't come when you call, you could pull out the big guns.... bread! Call them and leave a very sparse trail, just a few crumbs. They'll scramble for bits and follow you hoping for more, and when you get to the coop, toss in a big handful. They'll clog the door trying to get in!
x 2. if you do it often enough, they will become used to the routine and you will have no problems at all. I let all the girls out together, and Pebble... Peach won't come out now, but still... I usually have 20-21 birds out and they are very easy. the older girls taught the younger ones very quickly what the "shaking seeds in the container" sound means... delightful!

most excellent interspecies interlude! totally awesome pictures! I like your comment about nudging it with the stick to get a better pic...I was doing that with a tiny bright green spider in my car, but it got away, I got 2 pics but kinda blurry... Golly those Seramas are adorable!

I feel terrible! I drowned a chick! I knew better. I did have my reasons for leaving the water in there. Bottom line, it is dead.
So three hatched in 4 hours each. The first one to start isn't quite ready yet. It pipped, and began to zip. I saw yellow. I did see it breathing an hour ago.
I promise to post pictures later.

I'm so sorry that happened...

Show barn, my girls are so treat driven. They follow me about the entire backyard thinking I always bring them goodies ( who am I kidding, I do!) they go in every time I toss a handful of scratch into the run. They don't even eat all the strawberry tops I bring them anymore. Today they got green beans and bread. Although the dogs end up eating the bread before the chickens.

W4w that is some nice photography. If it had been me, I would have dropped whatever I was doing and went to find the dog lol not a camera. I don't particularly like reptiles. I keep thinking I'd rather have snakes around though than mice I guess.

10 egg day...gotta take a picture of the latest wellie egg. Oh I 'asked/ordered' 2-3 more chicks today...YAY ...if I ever see a serama chick....I'm going to bring home as many as I can fit in my pockets :) lol they are so friggen cute. I don't even care if they lay eggs they are just adorable.

13 eggs and a soft shell laid by Penny right next to the waterer... i thought she was poopin'... so I lowered the camera... darn it! could have gotten a good shot of it ploppin' out! Blu ate it with Pebble.

I have pictures and a story. Sally show this picture to your husband. Will post tonight. But had to post these two showoffs. Count is at 3 1/2. One hatching right now. Be back with pictures

Glad you guys enjoys the nature shots. I was a little worried about people freaking out over the mouse, but then remembered that you all saw my dead skunk pic.

The Seramas are friggen cute! Totally worthless, but adorable. A lot of personality packed into a teeny tiny chicken body. They are pretty calm and not aggressive toward people. My #2 son had them out at the 4H ChickenQue fundraiser, and they were pet and fondled and examined.... no problems.

I was just informed that OK has posted about new chicks while I was waiting for these to download. Must go see now.
