Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

All four chicks made it thru the day. Broodys had the chicks in the coop when I got home. So far so good no problems. Kian the problem you had today is my concern too but mine seem OK for now. (Concerned enough to build a broody facility ......

Quote: Three weeks Sunday. Picture I will get. They won't like the flash but I don't like the art of pooping up the wall either. (how do they manage to do that?) Even more reason to get pics is so you all can sex them for me. I don't have a clue what to look for. Pink combs early = rooster?

Interior decorating chicken style!

Pooping on the wall.

Yes, larger and/or pinker combs usually develop sooner for roosters.

Good idea about a broody pen. I've been getting some advice to get some chicks to put under my skinny broody to try and get her over it. Considering it, but have the same problem, no good place to put them for the first few weeks.

yes, for sure, early comb development for the boys...

it is pouring! a real torrent! I'm surprised I have a satellite signal actually... poor boys, getting drenched. I feel so bad. I'm still searching for corrugated roofing material. I drove to the city today to Home Depot, and they don't carry it anymore, nearest spot they knew of what another 20 miles away and I'm not sure where the store is once I get to the town... so I will try again tomorrow.

W4W, I love buckeyes, can't wait to see some pictures! Ruby loves flowers, my last Pug before her, ate flowers. rip the heads right off while i would be picking them...she was too funny... but I had to block the toxic plants off... she ate a bunch of mushrooms once, glassy eyed and dopey for a weekend... of course the only vet available was the city emergency place, 55 miles away. she did all right, but scary time! Ruby helps herself to the raspberries... when I can't find her during the summer, she's usually in the raspberries...eating away! HOPE you get some rain soon!!!!! I know y'all need it badly!

I would call contractors who build metal buildings/ pole barns, or put on metal roofs. Most of them have a few sheets left over from every job. (You order extra in case something gets cut wrong or damaged) I got all of my metal like that. Most of it free.

Thanks Cheeka. Sadly, we are done with rain for 5-6 months. There is a slight chance for some next Wed, though. That's the day of the end of the year 6th grade swim party! Historically speaking, that particular day has a 70% chance of dense fog and drizzle. Drought was called because there is very little moisture in the vegetation and the Sierra snow pack is nearly nonexistent.

If Scooter is in the garden, he eats asparagus, peas, and beans and usually destroys the plants while he's at it. Plums, apples, cherries, pears, and apricots are also greedily consumed. Around here the dogs eat blackberries, as do most of the other critters. Blackberries are in the top five of invasive noxious weeds around here, but they are so yummy! The buckeyes we have are California buckeye, with white flowers. Do you have the kind with pink flowers?

Waiting on those chicks! When does Mylee arrive?

OK, I like your idea on a broody pen. I have one. It started as my space. Then a chick room. Then it was a nest box room, with the option of closing it back off for broodies. Too bad I never got any boxes put in the other side.
Tonight I shut the door after upsetting Baby. I actually removed her from the nest, and she headed for the roost in the other room. I grabbed her, shut the door, and continued taking out the fresh eggs. I put her back in the box, and shut the door. I will have eggs on the floor and/or unhappy girls in the morning. I am afraid to move Baby to a floor box (covered litter box that only 2 girls know about) so I will see about either giving the box to the larger group (who will poop on the top

) or move the other 2 boxes into the big room (causing stress thanks to hammering).
Umm... I am tired, and forget who said what. So,
Cute pictures to all.
Sorry about the "helper" hen that went psycho.
Cute story about Roger Jr. and Roger roosting. Glad all is well now with the chicks and Roger.
I am not sure what to do about the chicks in the cellar way. I was going to put them in the small coop where Midnight is recovering (?) but fully plan on putting Baby in there since the nest boxes are on the floor, the roost is 2 inches off the floor, and there is a ramp to the ground.
Cleaning and planning will have to be done in the next 10 days!!
Night all! Sleep well!

Quote: I'm building a new 8 X 8 coop/broody house with nest boxes on the floor. The new covered run will be 8 X 12. It will adjoin my existing coop and run and I will make it so I can divide it off for different reasons (broodys) or open it up in the winter so its all one big facility.

Wow, plenty of room! An excellent plan. Wish we had more good flat space to build, but have already squeezed quite a bit on our little acre. After planning and looking on craiglist for cheap lumber and materials, I bought a little mini coop in a box (actually 2 boxes!) to put up for the Seramas. Will save a ton of time and aggravation and was not all that expensive. Just came today (free shipping!!) so we'll screw it together this weekend and add some enhancements. Says it's roomy enough for 6 large fowl chickens. Personally, I wouldn't put more than 2 or 3 in, so that means we can easily squeeze in 6 to 8 Seramas!

We'll add a larger run and go Serama crazy!

Oh, forgot to say we got 9 eggs today!

With one chronic broody that means there was only one other slacker. Still waiting for a perfect day.
