Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hi everyone! I've been MIA for a bit (double ear infection, followed by my 7yr old getting Scarlet Fever--strep throat with a rash-- and then me getting a severe case of strep myself! Loads of fun!). I wanted to share this though thought you'd all find it a bit funny:



I just this afternoon found this egg in the middle of my bedroom floor. Notice the teeth marks? Apparently Leah's (my daughter) little dog (terrier/chihuahua mix) went into the run, up the ramp to the coop, into the coop and nabbed this from the nest box, then carried it all the way back into the house and into our room. This is definitely a first.

Was wondering where you went. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Kid germs are icky. Love the toothy egg. My dad was telling me just yesterday that he found an egg lying in the middle of his barn. It was a wild turkey egg (he doesn't have animals anymore). We were wondering what might have dropped it there, but I doubt he thought to look for tooth marks!
 
no... it wasn't fine before you picked it up... it had just been clamped and it made the flight response necessary for survival, but that doesn't mean it was meant to live, which is why it probably got clamped in the first place. it wasn't because you held it gently in your warm hand. that was a comfort for the little chick. I think you would have found it the same in the morning if you hadn't held it.
 
Totally agree with Cheeka, and not just to make you feel better. I used to help at wildlife rehab, and if a critter suddenly had a burst of energy, got up to eat after being down all day, you could bet it was their last gasp and they always died a short while later. Deer, rabbits, possums, birds... didn't seem to matter. Happened to me just last week with a cold fledged scrub jay that we found in the yard. Died a few hours after a sudden burst of energy.
 
Thanks you guys. It doesn't bother me I just like to learn from this stuff. It happened so fast it really surprised me that one minute it was running and chirping and a few minutes later it was fighting for its life. Thanks for the input. Lets hope Roger saw the whole thing and thought I had something to do with it.
 
I awoke this morning to a glorious and sunny day! it's supposed to go up to 70+* with ZERO chance of precipitation! we need it. downtown is under 6 inches of muck and mud and debris now that the 3' of water has receded. my friends who have my chickens... their house was on the news last night. they interviewed the Fire Chief while he was at their place pumping the water out of the cellar. people were kayaking down main street... so many people just finished rebuilding from Irene... the fear was real and quite incredible... a few new places are ruined, but we're learning the new pattern of water now that they redirected some of the streams from the mountaintop, and parts of the creek. the flood plain is different now. one guy almost had me in tears. he moved to a new place... thought he'd be safe... according to the old flood maps, he was... but he lost his new place. he's leaving and never coming back. I think a lot of people will leave.

the storms prevented Mylee from coming home. I felt it was best for her to stay put for one more night. it was difficult, even for me... to navigate a way home and I know every possible way to get here... she'll be back sometime this morning, glad I am working a short day! We'll make the most of the sunny warm day, I have all kinds of fun sprinkler/splashing toys for her. more rain tomorrow and the beginning of the week

Poor Road Runner just can't catch a break with the girls. Fran keeps a close eye on everyone and if he even suspects Runner of any hanky panky, he bee-lines across the yard and drop-kicks him...

20 weeks and no sign of eggs. Some of the girls are red faced one day and pale the next. Most still have little to no wattle/comb (maybe its the breed? )
 
what a great day! I let everyone have hours of free range as I was home super early, the boys first, then the girls... Mylee made it by early afternoon and was so happy to be back! we did so much already, including making another batch of those awesome choc marshmallow cookies! She's watching Peter Rabbit and then it's off to bed... 11 Eggs, we had 6 of them for supper.

Some chickens have hardly any comb ever so that's not always a good indicator. Watch for squatting. That's when I found eggs shortly after they start to squat.
