Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Well I got two eggs today. That is out of nine hens. It has been really hot here in Louisiana it has been cooler the past few days with a nice now the rain is to start tomorrow. We had a wonderful day with the kids and grandchildren here. Wish my other two sons could have been here. One is in Illinois with his wife and children the other is in Afghanistan he is in the army. His wife came and spent a couple of hours. But it is not the same. I miss them so much. So that is why I got started with chickens. They give me something to mother. Lol my hubby said I love the chickens more than I do him. Which of course he knows different.

Oops posted before I saw this, ya bet its the heat! my DH gives me that too, then he wants to hold the baby duckies

he really likes the goslings the most, but is getting fond of the turkeys too. They are like a puppy, follow you everywhere!
my cousin came up for the afternoon, we hung out in the yard with the chickens... it was really nice. I made us some burgers and we were enjoying them outside in the shade of the maples in the front yard...when the gang arrived to stake their claim over part of the meal. Opal actually jumped up onto my lap and stole half of my "bun" in one quick swipe! we did have fun watching them chase each other around for the bit of bread... Opal did not really get any for her efforts, so she came back and tried to get some more. I ended up sharing most of my lunch, especially the parts that were under Opal's feet.

friends called to invite me to the local fireworks, but I declined. it's too far, too crowded, too much traffic getting out to go home... and it's not that great a show... now Albany on the other hand... that's a great show... but again, it's even further away, even more crowded and of course, way more traffic. I"m staying put. it's been a gorgeous day. max high of 78* with a steady lovely breeze. down the hill in the valley? it's 91*, with a heat index making it feel like it's 97* and there is not a hint of breeze. my cousin agrees it's perfect to stay here, and went downtown to get some ice cream while I wrapped up the chicken chores for the night.

I think I am down to only 3 hatching eggs, unless 2 of them got buried in the bedding... I did feel around a bit, but didn't find them. I triple checked all the collected eggs and I do not have any marked ones. wonder if they broke and were eaten? and it's official... Peach has returned to the nest. she's not sitting on anything at the moment... and she did come out briefly for a dust bath... other than that, she's been glued.

17 Eggs today, with 20 layers, 2 of whom are brooding, I can only expect a maximum count of 18... wonder who the slacker is???

LMAO it can't be a BR... we all know they are lil angels

Held a open house today for my flock of 11. The new broody coop addition is 95 % done. Little trim around the doors and windows but it is ready for birds. Opened the big clean out door to let them in. This was going to help in so many ways. More space for everybody. Less picking on each other. Broodys will have their own quarters to hatch their chicks. At least for now everybody would be happy. Everybody was a little slow and curious about entering the new quarters. There seemed like so much more room now. Nobody was even in the run and that is the favorite hang out. Finally everybody had the space they needed. They all gathered in the new coop and seemed very happy about it. Then all eleven of them started fighting again. Bunch of rednecks.

LOL you will so glad tho, sure will make things easier.

OK, that is truly a nice set up! and yeah... I still think that your chick is a cockerel. Look at the size of that comb! do male Delawares get any red leakage at all on the saddle feathers? that's something else to look for if they do... whatever it turns out to be... it really is a healthy and beautiful bird...

SBMom, I'm with OK, it's great, especially if it works for You and Your Needs!

I got festive and went out and first dark with a sparkler
OOOOOH AHHHHH! happy 4th (belated) Everyone!!!!

OK and SBM I like them both! U betcha I would use them, mine are not that impressive either, use what u got.
OK thats pretty awesome for a broody coop.
My Delaware chick. Do you all still think it is a rooster?

How old is "he"? I am thinking rooster.

You do know that PIE will fix this situation?

Quote: Good Morning Roger

of course there was PIE... yogurt covered in peanut heart sprinkles sat atop a pile of fruits and seeds... problem must be with the fact that she had to share with everyone else.....

I got a whole bunch of new Wilma photos this week... but this one is my favorite... she really is the picture of contentment... but just look at that face... ever see a grouchier lookin' face?

Even her little brow feathers are raised up to soak in the sunshine...

that's so cool AL, I"m getting some silkie eggs for Peach. she won't let Sirus get too close... so I am not able to let her hatch her own eggs...

it's so stinkin' hot... and humid... I've done some housework, but mostly the stuff that allows me to continually dunk my hands in cool water... like laundry, but I did do dishes, washed eggs, and cleaned the stove top, now to do the oven... and then to soak in the bath ~ it's full of cold water for hopping in and out of all day. the boys are out... I am due to make the switch, boys in and girls out... I just do not want to step out into the hot sun... but I have a nice platter of frozen fruits to use to lure the boys with... it will be quick (I hope)

ETA, yep, nice and quick, 15 minutes and I've gotten the boys in, the girls out, frozen fruit for everyone, collected 12 eggs, caught Coral's as she laid it to = 13 so far... and I'm back inside with a huge glass of cold cold water... not bad!

Blossom was jostling around with Broody Violet for any spot to lay her egg, but Violet doesn't want anyone in that coop with her anymore, to the point that she spends more time off the eggs chasing everyone out than doing her job of sitting. the eggs are still quite warm, but it's annoying.

the heat of the day brought the first Day Lily bloom, thousands more to come!

14 eggs collected, I'll check again for Blossom's egg later.
