Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Thank you MC! It is getting so close to them laying, I can just taste those fresh eggs!! Chicken run was supposed to be my garden, I just converted it to contain the chickens! We have a pair of Bald Eagles in our "hood", not to mention the Red Tails, and the vultures (which will take a live animal if hungry!), so I had to cover it to protect them.

Wow Sully! for me to say that you have a nice setup is the understatement of the day... incredible...! as for laying... they will lay when each individual is ready to lay and not one moment sooner. you'll probably wait the longest for your Ameraucanas, but I've had EE's that laid really early (17 weeks!) and some who laid after 30 weeks... and believe me when I say, it never loses it's appeal, finding eggs... it's always exciting, especially when a new girl starts laying... I remember the second egg ever found here... old BH called me at work to report the egg... and I was all happy... but I didn't think that it was a different bird that had started and he was all like... you didn't even ask me what color it is...! Green! I couldn't wait to get home to see it! it was another month before I got an egg from another colored layer... and that one was blue...

MC, nice to hear from you... I had noticed your absence... and am still missing W4W... but I figure she needs time to recuperate from her vacation... Baby may have been having a wrench over weaning her chicks... but I'm glad to hear that she's doing well and laying again. Midnight may always be a special needs chicken because of her leg, but it sounds like she is making adjustments. ramps may never be easy for her... is she roosting? also glad to hear she's laying again!
I'm so sorry bout the messy eggs... in the carpet, that cannot be easy, but i think I would start by pouring salt on the mess to make it a little easier to clean up the gloppiest parts... then worry about washing the carpet later.

I rescued a dog today. a Beagle. his name is China, which I do not like. that, to me... is a girls name... he's not in bad shape at all, the neglect was in it's earliest stage. I'll foster him here, and casually look for a home, but really, I will keep him... he lived on my route, I know him well. he's been around chickens, he loves cats, loves kids... and other dogs, but he's a bit afraid of bigger dogs. his first home had bigger dogs that fought with him, his second home should have been a forever home, nice kids, little family... but they got divorced, the mom put him outside permanently about 4 months ago and slowly forgot about him. it was this past weekend that he had no food or water. all she said was "he has to go". so I took him right then and there. I brought him to the groomer, he was so filthy... and he was so good! got his nails done, his ears cleaned, a really nice bath... a new halter and collar (his old collar was so gross, no way I was putting it back on after he was all clean...) Ruby loves him, the chickens are terrified of him, the cats haven't noticed him yet. he's currently sleeping at my feet while Ruby is snoring loudly in my lap.

I have more hatching eggs coming, they should be here Wednesday. Wednesday is also the day the eggs that Violet didn't lose are supposed to start hatching. Peach has those eggs and if they do hatch, I will leave her with those. I have a new used kennel cab, large... to put Violet in and move her to the newest little pen for brooding the newest eggs... away from all the hustle bustle of the apple coop. she won't be happy, but she will adjust (I think)... if Peach's eggs don't hatch, I will split the newest eggs between the 2.

can't remember the egg count so far, but I think it's 11. I had 11 yesterday, but 1 broke. I sold 2 dozen today and gave 1 dozen to someone who really could use the extra food... the egg rotation is still going strong, I don't have any older than 3 days. some of the pullet eggs are still on the small side, but I've no complaints... they are scrumptious and many are double yolks... plus I usually throw in an extra half dozen for the same price if they are all on the small side. I finally see that Rose (RIR) is laying again. I have 3 for 3 from the last 3 days. I missed that darker medium brown... I haven't taken egg basket pics for a while because it was missing from the pallet.

I took both dogs for a nice long walk to tire this guy out... he's a bundle of energy! he's got a great nose and great vision... he spotted a rabbit in the thicket at about 25 yards and was relentless about getting to that spot. but we walked there nicely, and then he went about sniffing everything in search of the bunny.

I have also tested his obedience in a very risky way. after I got all the chickens back into the dome, I let him off his leash. other than trying to roll in some chicken poop (cuz he thinks that'll make him smell handsome) he was perfect. he ran off only a few yards in any direction and would come right back even if I hadn't called yet. He's lucky that he was only in the beginning of neglect, he's desperate for attention and to prove that he can please... I'm sure he'll give me some trouble after he settles in more, but a good dog is a good dog. and he is a good dog.

Oh - Kay...... if chickens can have webbed feet... what do you supposed laid this?

Your a sweetheart for doing that for that dog.

Hi All, My run is finally finished and the chickens like being in there. I took the advice from this thread to put them back in their coop when it is getting dark. Works like a charm! Going into it in the morning is another story. They have to investigate the area around their coop, the barn, the horses, the young chickens in the separate coop, all the land surrounding the run, then finally the run. I have tried everything, even PIE, to entice them to the coop. Good thing I am usually not in a hurry in the morning, I just worry about the overhead threats. So, aside from the picture and the long blurb, my real question is about egg laying. The chickens ages are 16, 15, and 14 weeks old. The NH Reds, being the oldest, followed by the Ameraucana, then the Cream Legbars. I noticed that with the CL's, they all hatched the same day, but of the 4 roosters among them, only one seemed to mature very quickly. He has been crowing for two weeks now, the others are not nearly as developed as him. The Ameraucana Roo is twice his size, a week older, and no crowing. I also have 5 Barred Rocks, one Delaware, and one Buckeye, all pullets, that are 7 weeks old and 3 more Ameraucana's that are 5 weeks old. I figure when they start laying it won't be as exciting as when my first ever chickens start laying!

Do they all start laying around 20 weeks or do some breeds lay earlier and some later?? Also, it seems like there is a possibility they will lay in the run and not in the lovely boxes I built for them? I guess I will have to start watching where I am stepping!

BTW, this is the best thread ever! I go to this one first every day! Thanks for all the info for us newbies!

The run is awesome. So your "waiting it out" for eggs. Cheeka gave some good advice. They will get interested in the nest boxes as they get closer to laying. Right now they probably could care less but you are doing the right thing in having them early so they don't get in the habit of laying in the run. They prefer a box and will use them when they are ready to lay. Watch for the "squat". When they start "squatting" they are getting real close to laying. You will know what they are doing when you see one of them squat. You can "test" them......well I did and it seems to work. Hold your hand flat and place it on their back and push down slightly. If they are "squatting" they will drop down into the squatting position. Some say you can tell by their combs but some of my best hens never really grew much combs period. But they will all start when they are ready. I think that 20 -22 weeks is about average. You have some different breeds than me so they might be different. As for the Barred Rocks I'll just say I am sorry. They will start laying right after the bribery, burglary, blackmail, sabotage, fraud, and attempted murder of the other scratch eaters in your flock.

MEAT BIRD LIST

1 Roger

our poor BR's... it's so hard to explain how Wilma got to be the top name when it comes to flock mischief...a wave of the hand and "it's an inside joke" has become the standard reply. I'm really happy that Wilma still is so tame with me... Betty, while pretty mellow, does not like to be touched. Wilma and I made a video that is taking me a while to edit because I had to work alone, it's close up... it takes place in the Lily leaves... I flashed her face so she flashed her vent. nasty. but really funny... it has to be edited out. I'll get it finished soon, program is giving me issues with clipping it out and putting it at the very beginning instead of removing it ?????? I really want to post it here, because I know Roger will watch it and oh boy... nothing but trouble for OK!

Pups are sleeping together on the small couch, he's bayed at the door few times this evening, but he seems quite content. I don't think he'll require crating, with all the company to keep him entertained and out of trouble, but we'll see... I will use a few gates to restrict his access to most of the house. He's met a couple of the cats. at first they were not thrilled, but because he really does love cats, the whole "traumatic event" for the cat was more like a deflating whoopee cushion. Min Min had her tail all puffed up and he just gave her a little bump with his nose. then he followed her through 2 rooms reeeeaaaaallllly slow (Min Min was walking irritatingly slowly) sniffin' her butt... he's like a nose with feet. he's a good fit. he understands what "belongs" and is chilled out. I know he'll get a scent and then there is nothing else in the world for him, so he'll have a nice cable run for zipping around... Ruby and I walk several times a day, even if it's just in the back of the property... he'll love it, Ruby needs no leash, she heels perfectly when needed, so if he needs a lead forever, I won't tangle and get tripped up...

15 Eggs for the final count, g'nite!
