Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I don't think my 2 GLW roos have crowed yet (15 weeks), but today they wanted the JG's attention. I decided to put her in the grow out pen. It has one nest box no one else uses, and Cadbury seemed okay with it. She was taking too long to settle in, so I took the 2 eggs back. If she is in the box when I go in later, I will have some eggs with me to put under her.

so cool Sally!

OK, they'll crow... Pebble was at his new home for a month or maybe a little more before he crowed, late bloomers... don't complain, once they start, they won't stop loving the sounds of their own voices. often, it's a chorus around here, and I just love it when 3 (or more) crow at the same time... it's like harmony with all the pitches, but the kazoos are a riot!

Wilma, darling that she is, dumped her food and spilled her water within 15 minutes, so I put her back in the dome, with a strict scolding first of course.

the temps have dropped drastically! it's now 65*. 40 - 45 degrees cooler than the last entire week. earlier in the evening I took the pups for a great walk, so enjoyable for all of us - the heat was really kicking Ruby's butt... we went to the black raspberries and had a little feast. Chester can pick his own, very gentle about taking one berry at a time while leaving the unripe berries untouched. Ruby can reach the red raspberries in the side yard, but this bush is a little trickier so I had to hand feed her. got some great pictures, and then more pictures of the amazing sunset. great day! but only 10 eggs...

So they came out just now, I literally just ran here to upload photos for everyone....I took out the open shells and as you can see in this last picture the messyness. I still had water in the incubator and I did a quick sniff test of the eggs left...nothing smells bad...the one I expected to hatch doesnt have movement in it but it still looks good and I swear I saw movement in another..I am pretty sure two of the eggs had an early death...they just feel so different but I have a hard time seeing inside the eggs....so I added a bit of water and left the other eggs. I know its unlikely but I figure I should at least give them a chance and it won't hurt anything. The two chicks I got are already amusing us. My husband peeps at them...its so cute

and they are totally aware of us and come running to see what is going on. They both got their beaks dunked in water and have eaten. I ended up with the brooder setup...I don't trust the broody hen...I have seen her come off and since where that box is I can't easily supervise or intervene I am very hesitant. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler and I may just let her have them if my husband has time to put together something where I can watch to make sure she is a good mom. I would much rather the chicks be brought up naturally then to have them stay with us and later introduced to the flock. Everyone's first question of course is "Boys or Girls?" followed by "What did you name them?"
2 out of 7 for first time incubation AND shipped eggs...I am happy with that. Who couldn't be happy with all this cuteness around?

P.S. everyone in the house is sick with a fever lol including myself.

Super cute Sally.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope your family gets better quickly. My poor hubs has been sick with some nasty fever-achy-coughing thingy for over 2 weeks. Finally almost back to normal today, although the cough lingers.

Ty Ann they made me laugh. I love giving babies grapes and watching the game of chase begin....one of the first treats I gave my now 'big girls'

Thanks for the well wishes all....I just hope I feel better for my meeting in the morning, I am pretty sure my son will be staying home but I am not looking forward to a meeting at ten am if I feel like this.

Just sat down for a little snack (of grapes!) and tuned in to check on hatching update and saw Cheeka's post. Am I being watched? Felt like I was sharing my snack with Cheeka's chickens!

Fun to make them run backwards!!

Have a great week everyone!

glad y'all enjoyed the photo album! cracks me up... boys are still out free ranging (since early this morning), my legs hurt, I don't feel like doing much walking today, but I can't deprive the girls of such a lovely afternoon...

I took my friend Ruth to visit Bird yesterday, got some fun pics of her with 2 parrots perched on her... but Bird was really cute, showing off his "wife" to us, it's wonderful to see him so happy! we talked at length, I was able to convince her that it's in Bird's best interest to stay put. it would only confuse him and Houdini (the female) to take him away, even if she brought him back and forth... it's not "consistent". I know she misses him, but she really doesn't have the time or the ability to care for him the way he needs anymore, and while she promised him to me... to give him a life with a mate is way better than anything I can think of... besides, he's so close by, she can visit him anytime she wants, if she doesn't feel up to driving, I will take her... it's going to work out fine, Houdini's owner was thrilled to give him a permanent home. (and hopefully a new name... Bird is a terrible name.)
