Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

The little grey guy next to the feeder is my favorite little guy. He's totally grey without any other tones at the moment. Need a cute name for him.

I am trying to talk the hubby into letting me get some chicks... it isn't going well...

My mom's boyfriend brought a couple of guns this morning so we could shoot. He brought a .22 rifle and a .45 pistol. I was actually a pretty good shot, which makes me feel better. At least I know that if I have to do something about the huskies I can.
The .22 would be perfect for shooting predators.

The .45 is awesome for bears. My DH carries a .45 and I carry a .40 or .357 mag when we are riding around in the woods.

Sshhhhhh..... Si is laying an egg.

I didn't get the 1 egg that was in the nest this morning. Then we had target practice and I didn't get back to the coop until just a few minutes ago. This is what the girls had left me! A perfect dozen!

I got up this morning with a little bit of a crick in my neck. I decided to shoot anyway. It wasn't really that bad as far as kicking but my neck and shoulder on the left side is killing me. I can't turn my head much now.

Ooooooh, so stinkin' adorable, although I never meant to get you out of bed! That is sacred time, never to be sacrificed for unimportant activities (ie: anything that does not involve stinkin' cute chickens!). I love the awkward stage because they start showing their personalities.

A thicker perch would help them roost more easily. Their feet are different from songbirds, and it's not so easy for them to do the wrap around grip. Bigger is better for chicken roosts.

Don't be surprised if the one with the pretty eye markings (same on left in last pic) is a boy. Big comb and thick legs. Keep an eye out.

The grey one you like is very pretty. I didn't have any blue birds until I got the Cochins, and the mostly grey one is super friendly.

Congrats on your adorable little poopers peepers!!!

Hey! Waddaya mean you don't have blue birds?! Hellooooo!

(Please excuse Lupin, He's feeling a little under appreciated lately.)

W4W- I won't brag but I was in bed all day! Lol... I got up at 6 to go for a run and by the time I had dinner in the crockpot, chickens fed I headed back to the bed with a book. Got up to go to my friends house to let her dogs out and came home and crawled back in bed.... So getting up to take care of chickens was no problem!!! And yes you've deduced from how I spent my day that I have NO kids ;) lolololol

Thanks for the advice about the roost. It was 57 degrees and sunny today so I'll go out tomorrow now that the snow is gone and look for a bigger branch.

So far I've had perfect luck w getting all girls so I'm either due for a screw up or she's just trying to fake us out and will just be a sturdy girl!

Hope your luck continues! I had a montrously large EE chick that was a pullet. The slightly smaller one was the cockerel.

Oh, a whole day to lie in bed and read. (I love my kids. I love my kids. I love my kids.)
