Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Mortie, sorry about the eggs. I have been rigorously avoiding getting an incubator because I would be waaaay too obsessed and wind up with waaaaay too many chickens. From what I've read, 102 is not good in the early stages of hatching. High temps kill, and low temps slow them down. However, you don't know how long it was that high and if the egg temps actually got that high, so I would give it a bit longer.

Here are my new broodybators (someday). The Silkie replaced the unhappy red Cochin. She was broody for quite awhile before I picked her up, but is no longer. If anyone ever needs to break a broody, I can recommend a long car ride.

She is a hatchery bird and not going to win any blue ribbons.
Her distinctive looks have spawned all sorts of ideas for names. So far: Turtle (it's that neck!), Thingy (my older son), Mrs. T (hairdo reminds me of Mr. T), Dinah (as in Dinah-Saur), and Maggie (the magpie). Decisions decisions...




She has nice eyes, though. Her Cochin roommates haven't been named either.

I am hoping since I am starting them so early in the year they will lay before winter and they decide it's too dark and cold to do anything but eat.

If I have learned anything from this thread, though, it is that a watched chicken never lays so I guess I will just pretend not to care late summer when they are starting to get old enough.

They are ameracaunas and the brown ones are mystery eggs that I bought at the farmer's market to keep the little blue eggs company. No idea what they are. I could have made this easy by simply asking the guy what kind of chickens he has but noooooooo. Always gotta take the adventure route. Whatever they are, they seem to lay good sized brown eggs. Probably just barnyard mixes. We'll see.

I set them on 2-23 so we've got a long way to go. I candled a few of them last night (day 4) and saw that someone placed on of those spider rings I had when I was a kid in each one. Very funny. I thought they were chicken eggs, not spider eggs. Whatever. I'm sure they will be adorable spider chickens!

Now back to reading the thread. I am still way back in 2012....

W4W, she sure looks like a broody with her plucked breast! she's darling and whatever you choose for her name will be great, except Thingy. she's more deserving than that... and you've got me wondering if Dinah Shore was teased as a little girl and called Dinah Saur.....that never occurred to me before, I bet she was......

the plow just went rumbling through, it's 2* outside but sunny and clear. we're not supposed to have any precipitation today, but we have 2 more storms coming in the next week. so much for temps staying above zero for the first week of March too. such a bummer. the extended forecast is so depressing that I turned it off before I returned to my bed until it's all over.

Did you guys know you can hard "boil" eggs in the oven? It's true.

Or you could just do what I do and try to incubate them.

Anyone for some egg salad? Deviled eggs?? Anyone??

Thanks for the advice, Roger. I was also planning on not feeding them after midnight, just to be safe.
