Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Read your thread all the way through this winter. Giving up TV frees up lots of time when there are seven hours of daylight. Roger is one of my favorite names (dad and brother). Thought for about two seconds you were taking it in vain. I just know my first rooster will be named Cogburn. That might be a BR hen if I get one.

Went up to the farm couple weeks back to see about the tree that went over. This is where I grew up!
My dad had already started in on cutting it up

because he doesn't have enough firewood! Didn't know an 80 yr old could be so incorrigible.

This is the view beyond the downed tree, part of a very old orchard. Couple of the apple trees are at least 60 yrs old.

Little building in the foreground is our old chicken coop. The run has been smashed in by falling branches and has mostly fallen into the little creek on the far side. Larger building behind the coop was the original homestead house (circa 1900). It was only 2 rooms and was later used as a carriage house. The last incarnation was as my dad's workshop.

See the daffodils? Spring is coming!

Such an overgrown mess. No one has time any more.

View off dad's back porch. 3 little deer are in view. I planted that multi-trunked oak from a seedling when I was in grade school. Mom said it wouldn't grow there because of a hardpan layer in that area. Explains why it's so puny for a 40 year old tree!

Here's the barn. Many hours spent playing in that barn, swinging from the rafters and climbing on the alfalfa bales.

Covered up firewood will not go bad. lol Looks like my firewood collection. I'm working on the winter of 2016 now. Nice pictures. Love old farms

Wow, lots of reading to catch up! love the poems, the comebacks and the pics - W4W, the old homestead is beautiful even if it is overgrown in spots!

16 Eggs today up here, 3 from the Fosters and I got home in time for a bit of free range. it was cold, but tolerable for a while, but it started to snow and the wind was blowing, so they headed in on their own. they're so easy... just wait until the first really fine day with green grass... I am certain to be playing ring around the lilac for hours.

I'm whooped, slept terribly last night because I'm a wimp and I watched something creepy on TV. woke up about every 20-30 minutes, probably just before REM started... I need a good night's sleep.

Sometimes I beg God to knock me out with a hammer. I am always surprised when He doesn't. So I lay there. Awake. And thinking. And remembering. And getting annoyed that I am thinking. Wondering. Imagining. And just driving myself crazy!!

Haha. Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight!

LOL......Rooster Cogburn. Glad you joined us. Keep us posted on your progress. And throw us a poem every now and then. That was good stuff. Sure to make the poetry book that never got off the ground. But we can blame Roger

The trick will be to remember all I have used and never use the same "ation" word twice. Keeps my mind occupied while doing some wrenching, painting, wood cutting etc. May have to switch to a different suffix over time. Yep, I blame Roger.

I'm sad today. We just found out our 87 year old neighbor died Friday night. We knew something had happened on wed night but his family doesn't know us so they didn't tell us anything til we just happened to run into them today.

He was an old time crochety farmer and reminded me so much of my grandfather who I adored. His daughter told us how much he liked us (and then said how shocked she was because he typically didn't like the neighbors).

Now we're hoping they don't sell the land to a developer because he would have hated that. He was so happy we moved in and were starting a farm. But we live in jersey and land is vastly disappearing to gaudy houses!

So God bless Ralph!!!!! Wish we had gotten to know him better!!!

Both ends of the spectrum today....you've got me who asked a question that was answered in the very first post (since it's been several thousand since I read that one) and some other person who appears to have only read the first post.

Someone mentioned the chicken police...see I do have a neighbor who might do that. He is a pain in the behind, and sadly there will be ample opportunity for him to get cranky about my new pets long before they start pumping out those little neighbor bribing nuggets. Maybe I should get some farmer's market eggs and give them to him and pass them off as my own....now there's an idea.
