Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Scrambles, I think you are right. Don't mess with a good thing. There was a featured article about hatching with a broody and it said that once the chicks hatch, the hen rarely abandons them, but moving her before the hatch can be risky. You must have well behaved girls.

They are behaved now... when chickies are in the picture..... not sure how that will play out. I hope in a good Auntie way. No a cannibalistic way...
Maybe the move should be at one day old. Too the dog crate...

When I first brought Rumples home... the others picked on her. She hid in the coop all day long. Penny would not let her eat or drink. After a few days... I opened the pen door to let the girls free range. Rumples never left the pen, but it gave her the opportunity to eat and drink. About a week later, she would venture out of the pen for a short distance. Then the girls worked things out and all is well.

I might not move Rumples to the crate. She is doing so well right now that I am afraid to rock the nest. She comes out to eat and goes right back. The others are not bothering her. I am worried that if I move her, she will wake up in the morning and freak out. I would be heartbroken if the eggs got destroyed. DH says to leave her be. Maybe move her when the chicks are a day old??

What do you all think??

we had one that got in the fence and she riped her neck so bad we thought it was half off, moved her to a small cage and put meds on it, then about 2 days later we put a smaller one with her so she was not alone, after a mth she looked so good we put them both back in the coop, they would come to door but never came out so I started putting corn right at the door way for them for 2 days then I put it on the step right outside the door, it was funny to see, they run out reach for corn run right back in, I did this for a week then one day after I took care of the other chickens on the back side I went to the door and put it on the ground, they came out and eat, the others never came around while they eat, then I just put a hand full on the ground and they came out, next thing I knew they were running the other chickens away from the door so I stopped and just did the yard, to look at her now never know she would not come out, she is the first one out in the morning.

At Last eggs:

On Sunday I decided enough is enough.
Shop bought eggs are rubbery and tough.
My current hens have all gone off the lay,
despite being pampered with mealworms and hay.

So I took my egg money and got me two girls.
They are Henny and Penny and come with no frills
The are ex-battery hens with no feathers and toes
but it won't be long before beauty shows

But the best part, was next day
when I peeped, on the hay
lay a most anticipated surprise
it was smooth and beige and the most incredible size

I will look after you chooks,
despite your odd looks
May the rest of your days be filled with peace and rest
you will be provided with only the best.

Henny, before she could stand on her own and walk.

Awesome!

no eggs today.

I set up the garage brooder today to make sure it's working out because any day now the babies are going to need to go out there. I wish it was 10 degrees warmer...

A few of the girls came out to try the little play pen I made them. If unsupervised it has a top. I brought the dog out too and she is going to be a problem. Ugh. Stupid dog. I think she will really try to get them in their run. I am burying wire to prevent digging but her interest is pretty intense.

Hello and welcome!

Henny and Penny are lucky girls, getting a reprieve from hen purgatory. But no toes?! Why? That sounds dreadful. They're going to look lovely after the next molt and hope you can share pics then too. Have your other chickens accepted them, or are you keeping them separate?

My neighbor just called today to say that their new dog wants to eat her chickens, and one of her hens is an escape artist so won't stay in the coop/run. She has offered me the hen, 3 yr old Ancona. What do you guys think? Could one strange hen make it with my mob? We might give it a try.

That's a good idea Mortie.
