Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Closing and reopening BYC fixed my reply box issue... i couldn't do anything but type, no pics, and I couldn't give ovations. Chedder Cheese Head will come home. my coat and my boots (stinky ones) are outside with a bowl of water. it was deer he chased, and he went really far, the wind is too howly so calling his name was futile, besides, even if he could hear me, he would ignore me. there's no way he'd hear a cookie box, he was at least a half mile away when I gave up and went home - the woods are steep, it was dark - I'm not breaking my neck for a dog who will come home when he's good and ready.

Royce was splendiferous today.

He got the wrong end of the hen.

Just checking in. I will be MIA for a few days. The catfish are calling me and I must answer. Hey ROGER do you like catfish??? They are the devil fish. They swim away even after they have been filleted. Have a good WEEKEND!

Wow.... So much going on!!!! Love all the Siamese kitties!!! They are just a beautiful breed. Always wanted one but never had them. The only breed I have besides the general domestic is Manx. If you ever get an opportunity to have a Manx cat you won't be disappointed. They have such the personality. More like a dog than a cat!

Speaking of dogs I'm glad Chester found his way home!!!

Lindz congrats on the babies!!! Fluffy pics please!!

I think scrambles is right! Royce has the wrong end of that hen!!!!

Well one of my little amerucanas died. I saw it coming. Not surprised. I've actually had really good luck with my shipped chickies so I knew I was bound to run into some bad one of these times. Now I have 2 but it seems silly to raise just two! Should I go get some more????? Can't really handle too many more and I think there are minimums so I'll probably not.... Oh well!!!

I just went out to give the gang some water. I realized I should get the eggs. I collected one from the first hiding place (you know. BENEATH the nest box) then the second under the roost. Four from the first nest box, and then I went to the last box. There were six eggs in one hand, and I wiggled and juggled the five eggs in the box. Could I do it? Yeahhh I can do it! I got the five eggs, and with my hands cupped, eleven eggs piled precariously, I stood up, and (you know where this is going, don't you?) then there were six.

W4W, I meant to respond when I saw that you (jokingly) asked if she would notice if one or two didn't make the trip. I was thinking of asking her if I could buy a male (there are three I saw without looking too hard). I just got a message from her. She offered me two chicks. I don't think she knew they developed combs so fast. They were only born Tuesday night I think.
There is a sleepy head. She kinda worries me. She sleeps through me poking (gently!) her, and I just saw one chick run over her twice. She only moved when I went to pick her up. No pasty butt. I am wondering if she is okay. I am going to make some Sav a Chick water. Anyone have an opinion? Is it okay for one chick to be less active?
You know? Three weeks ago I was worried about the one poult being so lazy. Hmm. I worry too much. Or do I?

Since I just lost one I'd worry. Is she the same size? They grow so fast that it's usually easy to see one that is lazy and small...that's when I'd worry.

So I've hit the first downside of free ranging. Found an egg in the grass outside the run! It really is like an Easter egg hunt!

Egg Math is opposite of Chicken Math.

I would definitely give the sleepy chick a little TLC. Make sure she is eating and drinking, sav a chick (or a few drops of sugar water) and maybe some scrambled egg, see if she perks up. There's always that mysterious failure to thrive thing that can happen. All you can do is try.

Are you going to keep a couple? The website made it sound like they don't like hot weather, so summers out here would be a problem. Maybe you're cooler in PA. I'm already worried about my Cochins in the hot weather. We've had several days of 80° already, and one pants quite a bit. Going to have to get a mister or something for when it gets hot.
