Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

W4W - I'm really thinking it's new birds... but they are hatchery quality so who knows. I did get 4 eggs today so with 4 softshelled that implies to me that a couple of them must be from new layers. I haven't been giving them layer because not all were laying and I didn't want them to have too much calcium. But I did have oyster shell available. I topped it off today so maybe that will entice them.

Mortie-Love the pics. I've given up trying to guess ever since I was totally convinced my one BCM was a boy. But he's been laying eggs so I'm thinking I'm wrong about that guess.

I've been really proud of Rawley and really scared that my chickens are idiots. When I'm walking him on the leash he lunges at them to play. But for the past couple of days the crazy chickens have been free ranging when he's been outside (unwatched - but I can check on him out the window). We have him on a long rope and the chickens are well within his range. But he just lays there and lets them go about their business.

I don't really have the luxury of waiting a super long time to figure out which ones are boys. Technically I only have until may 10th to get down to my 4ish (if the rules are bent) flock. Legally I should only have 4, hubby wants me to keep 6. I think if I had to pick today, I could pick out 4 for sure females, so I'm feeling good about it. In the next couple of weeks they should become more and more apparent.

Gave them pie tonight. Some chicken scraps with a side of noodles and a chunk of sod for dessert. I really need to stop digging up my lawn to give my chickens dirt to play in...

I feel so at home in this forum lol, thought I had too many birds and can't figure out why only half my birds are laying. Now i am not so worried
Welcome to the flock. This is my favorite thread. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful. None of the nastiness that can be found on other threads. Except for maybe ROGER. She can be a little harsh. Don't forget to give your girls PIE and they will reward you with lots of eggs..... maybe.

TWO eggs... TWO eggs... we laid TWO eggs today!! I THOUGHT that I heard a little chirp from Rumples nest, but it is probably wishful hearing. Oh how I wish that she would let me lift her up for a peek. She is a vicious little snake. Bless her feathered heart...

Cute chicks! I like the grey blue ones especially. Not a clue on boys vs. girls. Astrid made it pretty apparent from, like, day three that she was a he. And George has always looked like a girl. Pink combs before four weeks of age seem an indicator.

George hangs more and more with the flock, and has no concerns with flying up and roosting right in the middle of everybody at night, so I am no longer worrying about her. Hattie still likes to bully her, and George runs behind Astrid, who faces off against Hattie, then gets that special feeling and mates Hattie, which just destroys Hatties streed cred. They broke the hanging feeder today with their shenanigans.

The eggs are being egg like. I so hope they hatch.
