Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

So sorry whoops! I think birthing anything esp something unnaturally like eggs in an incubator runs the risk of something going horribly wrong. I think all we can do is learn from it and try again. I debated on getting an incubator and still might as a backup but I think I might try a broodie since I have two silkies.

Thanks for sharing. Not only are we willing to share in your disappointment but you're experience will help us in the future too! Congrats on the one you got and I hope it's friends turn out to be as good as astrid (only girls tho) was to George!!!
 
Well, I will see how Gilgamesh grows out. If he looks good, then he is going to be the flock roo. But, I think I need to find some unrelated, or only distantly related CCL females. The other three I am going to grow out and pick the female that fits in best to be a flock member. The others I will sell at the local swap when they are big enough.

I guess some positives to take away from it - half the eggs pipped, so I am not having the same issue as the marans. Next hatch (shudder) I will dry incubate and go by weight loss, as that seemed to work well, at least up until hatch day; but perhaps up the humidity at hatch from 65 -70 up to over 70 percent.

I have learned a lot about assisted hatching.

I have a Cream Legbar cockerel, and considering the hatching issues, I think it would be better to outcross him with unrelated females.

The candling system I have works well in Cream Legbar eggs. But, I think I will really minimize candling as two of the chicks that pipped, pipped in the wrong end. I am slightly suspicious that it was due to candling too close to hatch.

The chicks are so cute! I want to take lots of photos of them to make greeting cards and whatnot.

what a great day! all around, so terrific... I had that awesome morning with the flock and the egg hunt got even crazier - found a couple on the lawn in various spots, and the Foster hen who likes to squeeze in the outer wrapping got back in and did indeed lay her egg in there... Fannie Did lay an egg too! I almost didn't want to leave for the day, but I got all dressed up and had a fantastic time! dinner was amazing - I had leg of lamb, so did Sweetie's Mom and Sweetie had duck. the salad bar was crazy and we all were so stuffed! we were at the restaurant for 2 hours! there was no waiting for anything... it just had a very laid back and relaxed atmosphere. loved it...

I think I would maybe get a warning first but I'm sure they would come back to check to make sure I was down to 4. Only way they would ever know is if one of my neighbors squealed on me...and I have one that is a big jerk. I'm quite sure he would like to take the chance to get me in trouble.

Aw that is too ban Mortie. Maybe you can extend the olive branch with some eggs for that neighbor. As long as there is no rooster... who should care. I do not think that I have a limit although I should check. I can have a roo, but if were to become a noise violation, it would have to go. My DH does not like the sound of a roo... I love it!
