Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Level with me ladies.

I just moved all the chickens outside for the day and after washing my hands twice, they still smell like chicken. And not in a good way.

I *suspect* this is because I have 15 chickens in a 4x4 box where they are sleeping in their poop. There is just no way to keep up with that many chickens in that small of a space....anyway, when they are outside more and there are only 6 of them and roosting up out of the litter they won't stink quite as much....right?!

My coop smelled horrible when I was feeding fermented feed. So did my birds. It was disgusting. I went back to dry feed, and now nothing smells until you stick your head in the coop. But that's only because I don't clean like I should because my coop sucks and isn't cleaning friendly.

When mine were in the garage, the whole garage would smell if I let get too bad, so I started changing the pine shavings every couple of days. In good weather, I rigged up a big outdoor pen on the grass and that helped keep the brooder cleaner by a lot. I planned on having them out in the coop by 5 weeks, but it took longer to finish (lots of rain that year) so I trekked them back and forth between the outdoor pen and the garage every day. They got too big to carry at once, so I had to split the load and make two or three trips. Time consuming, but more enjoyable than cleaning poopy brooders. I don't even remember how old they were when finally moved out to the coop. I've blocked all that out!

I do deep litter... Sometimes scoop under the roosts. They do free range much of the day but my coop doesn't smell anything more than a just general "animal" odor. Nothing like poop or anything. I would say add more litter and let them keep it turned over...

My girls don't stink.
 
I have been told that mine won't compost since it's not actually on the ground. I was planning to do a variation of the DLM and I designed my coop to hold 6-8 inches of litter. Hopefully that's enough. I think the problem with the brooder is that it's just too small of a space that they've been spending all their time in except the last couple of days they've been outside some.

We finished the framing of the run just now so pretty soon they will have 72 square feet of run space to poop in. Not a lot for 15 but plenty for 6.
