it's an all time record! technically... there's one who didn't lay, but she's excused for sitting on those eggs... today is the close of day 8 and she's looking gorgeous! I can tell she took a quick bath today, the earth by the kennel is hollowed out in a chicken shape.

But on a lighter note... I did hang out with the chicks today for some supervised free range. Rumples is trying to tiptoe, but not too much. It hurts her. By watching the behavior of them... I am trying to determine the sex of the chicks. I am guessing that the 3 that stick close to mom are female and the roamers are male. That is my theory. Lets see how it goes.. Oh and.... the two Lav Ams with the fat combs are two of the roamers. The Black (lav) Am I thought was female, but that one is the bravest and most adventurous of them all.

Wiped out today. Last night, I took the boys up to the local observatory for National Astronomy Day. 5 years ago my older boy was awarded a telescope from the Astronomical Society, and we have been volunteering at public events ever since. It was very busy and we didn't get home until after midnight, but the people had a great time. Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn were all visible in the sky at the same time. Lots of ooooooos ans ahhhhhhhs!

We were going to eat out at the Olive Garden, but there were people in line out the door, so we skipped it. I haven't eaten at that place for 20 years, but though we'd give it a try. Oh well, probably didn't miss much. We used to call it Salty Garden!

Soooo, instead we went to Costco, had pizza and dogs, and got a big cat climber tree for Ming. She's already playing on it, so good deal all around and the best part is I didn't have to cook!

4 Seramas still sitting on a total of 18 eggs. Halfway through for 7 of them, so not too much longer to wait.

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. I still have laundry to bring in and animals to feed, so I should get off my keister, but it sure does feel good to sit down.

If you can get close up pics of the combs, I can help you sex them.

Anybody ever make these?
yes, 2ce, and very recently as I saw the post on facebook around St. Patrick's Day. the first time, I only cooked the peppers the same amount of time as the eggs, the second time, I lightly sauteed the peppers before putting the eggs in and I liked it better. it's fun and easy and looks really pretty on the plate.

W4W, that sounds like a blast, if a long night... I'll never forget the night of my 21st birthday. Venus was at the base of a fingernail moon, like an earring. it was soooo beautiful. I have seen it in that position once since, but the night wasn't as clear and bright as that first night!

Scrambles, those chicks are so cute, but like W4W said, closeup face shots would help, and you can't go on the proximity to Mama... at least not for girls. my boys have been the Mama clingers...

I had a mostly fantastic day - got a new to me shed (8' x 8' x 8') delivered and installed today, and I bought a new to me grill! it's a commercial size with all the bells and whistles! such a score!

Broody Mama is finished with day 9, and she ate almost every bit of those greens!

Sillie took 3 baths today

not the best pic of Fannie aka Bakery... but it's the only one I got of just her today, she laid 2 days in a ROW! she returned to the pen during free range, I let her in and shut the door to keep the boys out. when she sang, knowing the nest was empty... if she laid, it would be obvious... and she did... anyway, the boys were all hanging out at the doorway so I carried her out to avoid the chase. I would have loved to get a selfie, but she is so huge and heavy... I couldn't manage to hold her and manipulate the camera... she was very comfy and let me carry her over to where her flock was hanging out.

he hates me. kicks me every chance he gets. not that I can feel it... still, wish he wasn't such a dink. same with his mate Max. I won't get more D'Uccles. I wanted to get them some pullets, but I don't want to breed more tiny terrors... wish he didn't lose his points...

on the flip side, my elderly friend had a difficult day today. melancholy that she couldn't shake sent her into a tizzy. she was supposed to come out with me for the day, she refused to leave and was ranting about punishing everyone who she felt neglected her... then she told me to go home. so I did. but I went back in early evening and stayed a few hours. she was still miserable, but we made a plan to go out tomorrow after work, do some shopping, get a bite to eat and go visit her parrot, Bird. I really hope tomorrow is a better day for her. it's been over a month since her last meltdown. at 86, if she declines now, it will be rapid. if she can get it together tho'... she could have a few more years of independence. I love her, won't force my will on her...I know what she wants, so I'm doing my best to make it happen.

27 Eggs today

No need to apologize. Everyone needs to vent now and then. Hope things work out.

Cheeka, you had quite a day! Is the new shed going to be a shed or a coop? I have heard that the d'Uccles and d'Anvers roosters can be little pills. Seems to be part of the breed. At least they're small enough to fend off easily. Sorry to hear that Ruth had a bad day. She is lucky to have you to help her out. Hope you both have a good time tomorrow.

Still no eggs:/ Ot has been over a week now since my girls started squatting. The suspense is killing me!!
So hard to wait! Are their faces turning red yet?

So my bantam coop has gone crazy! 4 of 5 Serama hens broody and sitting on eggs, and now both of the Cochins are broody!!!
barnie.gif
There are no more eggs to set! I wonder if I can get them to take the Eng Orp chicks. That would be cool, since I got them to be raised by a broody (who is also still broody), but the chicks are a week old tomorrow so chances are slim. All those broody chickens and I am raising chicks in the garage!

They make up for it by being very cute and friendly. I will try to post pics of them tomorrow. Slow growers- no feathers yet.
