Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I haven't show my crew yet. We are humble compared to some but they all make us happy

Our chicks ... 12 red sex links and 3 silkies

That's our ducks! 2 rouans ...2 khaki Campbell's ... 2 blue Swedish .... And 4 pekins.
Nothing humble about that crew!!! It's pretty fabulous!!!

not much going on up here... rain rain and more rain, but it's good... it's supposed to rain for most of the week, so I made them Oatmeal Pie and kept them inside. I've collected 17 Eggs, and I think that may be all for the day, they've not been singing... the boys crow from time to time, but for the most part, it's very quiet back there.

love the broody GC lindz! that's a good sign, for a sex link, known for exceptional laying and not being broody, to actually want to brood! she's certainly a keeper, and it's good, she'll take a break from laying so she'll have better longevity for the future!

congrats on the sale CLindz! that's great!

as for the nesting thing... mine are weird, they prefer larger, more open spaces that can hold more birds, it just needs to be dark and ventilated. they use the entire floor of the apple coop in the dome - the Fosters love their Dogloo... it's pretty rare that they use the proper nest boxes

I don't think they're weird, they're all just good friends! I'm wondering if it makes a difference to have several birds of one type of breed, as opposed to single copies of lots of different breeds, like I do. My girls tend to hang loosely together, and there don't seem to be any close buddies, unless there's some food around, of course. Maybe your girls feel safer in larger groups so want to nest together. My flock is much smaller, and there is not much wiggle room in the pecking order, so they might feel safer in their own box. Ahhhh, the fascinating world of chicken psychology.

So who do you think is going to lay first, team Chicken or team duck? Bets anyone?

In spite of being allowed to range all afternoon and an almost limitless supply of pie, no eggs. No squatting either. Combs had grown some but they've kinda stalled and are still smallish. Going to be a while.
I've got one Rock and one NH red with pretty good combs and wattles, that are really red, one of the just arrived Easter Eggers, with the pea comb is the one that is squatting, she's only been here 4 days, I was told they turned 18 weeks old last Thursday. I haven't bought any eggs in a while, maybe I should.

JW12..Very nice flock. How old are your sex links? I only have 6 sex links, and they supply us with all the eggs we can eat. Also have enough to share.

mortie, you crack me up.

Scrambles, I haven't seen an egg fart since Silkie Gossamer started laying - and btw, she is quite a good layer. roughly 4 eggs a week!

I gave a dozen bantam eggs to a very good customer today along with the 3 dozen she ordered. she's going to Manhattan to visit her kids and grandkids, I thought the grandkids might enjoy the little eggs... Mylee loves them, she says they're for children because they are so small...anyway, they thought they were awesome because they look just like my regular assortment as far as color... Peach lays green, Esther, brown with speckles and Gossamer, off white/cream.

They are 12 weeks old today. Between my wife's work place and mine, they are already standing in line wanting eggs. I never dreamed people wanted fresh eggs like they do. We have 8 people wanting a dozen a week! I don't even know what to charge plus I want eggs too lol. We have 3 teenagers in the house that all play sports so they want the protein that comes from eggs, we go through about 3 dozen a week just in our house. I might need more chickens if the demand keeps up. I said that to my wife and she said let me guess.... Your going to confuse me with your chicken math so I will say we need a few more chickens! I just smiled sweetly
