Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

yes, they need bedding in the nest boxes to keep the eggs clean and unbroken.
I use pine shavings. They hated the straw.

You can shred newspaper, use a towel, or even an old rug.

My chickens do best with straw. They can't kick it out as easy.

mine have straw, i put pdz in the bottom and in the coop floor. they did for a while make their own straw nests on the other wall of the coop even with fake eggs in the nest boxes, now they like to use the 2 corner nest boxes.

I'm right with everyone else on the bedding in the nests. although, mine love to kick it all out, even straw... since they stand to lay, it helps to have some cushioning for the egg to land on.

speaking of eggs... I got my very first Fairy Egg egg today! (my girls are ladies, and do not lay fart eggs) I was checking on my broody girls after I fed and watered everyone else and Gossamer was up - all 4 of her eggs are perfect and the tiny 5th egg was among them! so she laid during a broody spell... it's so cute!

but first, the butterfly... I had to pull the Dome's dirt bath out as it flooded in last nights storm. it was a stinking sodden mess... so when I got home, I was ready to haul it to the ditch and hose it out but I found this beauty scavenging for tidbits of ???

the egglet is the size of a nickel. I put it on top of the quarter and I could see the edge of the coin all the way around.

I'm going to try to blow it... might be hard to do... but I'm going to try!

I don't shred my newspaper. I sort of paste it to the wall so they have something to read while they're sitting there. Like having a magazine in the bathroom.

Mine prefer USA today. The local paper bores them for some reason.

Oh my lord that had me rolling..... The kids were all like what wrong with him? These kids now a days just don't think anything is funny

I should have said they always request the comics....but I like to think that my birds are more interested in current events than that. Too bad my stash of newspapers is from 2012...
