Speaking of girls who have not been around a roo... look at Maggie. Her wattles drag on the ground when she eats and get comb is practically flopped over and deep red...she has looked like this for weeks! Freak chicken. If AC come to the door I just might get rid of her!
.
Mortie can you buy her off with eggs? When we lived in a city with a numbers ordinance a friend had way over the limit but she would only put a group out which had the same number of colored individuals so no one caught on tha they were different
That stinks mortie.... Why can't people mind there own business? Always a busy body around that think they have to be right. Makes you wonder what happened to some people along the way. I guess it's just the world we live in now though. I'm going to stop because I'm about a sentence away from being on a soap box! Lol
Is it possible for my 10 1/2 week rooster to be getting it on w the girls?
I cracked 8 eggs for scrambled eggs today for the crew and all the ones from today had a white disc on the yolk. The ones from a couple weeks ago didn't.
yes, he will attempt to mate at that age. if he's really aggressive about it at 10.5 weeks, he's what I would call a dominant rooster and may end up being generally aggressive. had one, Barney, got taken by a fox at 15 weeks 2 days, which was sad, but truthfully, that fox probably did me the biggest favor. he was already a major handful - smitten with me, but awful with everyone else. but like mortie said, he's not fertile yet.
Yeah it seemed pretty early but it was just so striking that the few from today had a distinct white spot that wasn't on the others... But it's prob just my wishful thinking cause I need more chickens!!!! Ahhhh no I don't!
the white spot is the females genetic material... and I'm back up to 47
PB, congrats on the second egg! can't hatch those, they're too small and won't likely be fertilized even if you have a rooster. even a pullet who is 8 months old is young to have a high success rate. best to wait til they are 10 months old, then learn how to candle them so you don't waste your time.
Val, I say tomorrow too, by noon.
and I won't post my 2 day photo, it would just not be kind... I got more today than JW got in 2... 17. I didn't make it back on byc last night... I got 12 yesterday. today, I was able to sex all of the older chicks tho'... of the 6 that Peach and Gossamer hatched, I have 4 boys, and 2 girls. please let BB's chipmunk chick be a girl... if it isn't, I may have some sexlink thing going on between Royce and the Buff Orps.
^ all four boys together... v the silkie bantam boy who was basically squeezed out of the top pic...
my pretty girl with the dark green legs up on the roost
oh nuts, all those loaded at once and I hit medium... the silkie mix girl on the left...
the baby
anyone remember Pebble? he's doing great...
love the chickies lindz!!! they are just so beautiful!
I don't get enough eggs to buy them off with them. It would take me a week to save up 6 which is a respectable peace offering and that means none for me which I would happily do but they are so horrible I cod see them not accepting them. Not wanting any of my dirty butt chicken eggs or something stupid like that. I do wonder why they are so nasty. They have been that way since they moved in 6 years ago.
Cheeka is that the green legged one you were hoping was a girl? Goodness that's a lot of boys. Will you eat them?
My other neighbor was just telling me yesterday about her niece that lives a mile or so from us who got 5 checks figuring one would die or be a rooster. They all lived and are about 18 wks old now. Her jerk neighbor called ac on her and they came and found out she had 5 and they made her get rid of one THAT DAY. So...I am not too hopeful for mercy.
clindz, that pic is adorable! Cheeka, your babies are so pretty, how fun!
Mortie - thank you for being excited for me, in spite of your worries about the neighbor. I hope to give a positive egg report by the end of the weekend. Maybe you will have a good 2-egg day tomorrow to distract you.
mortie, that really sucks about your neighbors. Hope it doesn't put a damper on the joy of expecting eggs.
The sad thing is they outlaw the roosters because of the crowing, but some hens make much more noise than a rooster. They just usually don't get loud at 5am.
My brother was watching the critters while we were gone and he told us one hen was making a huge noisy fuss for almost 2 hours! He wondered how the neighbors could stand it. Fortunately that hen doesn't do it very frequently AND we can have chickens and roosters here legally, so I don't have to worry. (Although I want to stay on good terms with everyone.)
If AC comes around, maybe you can hide 2 in the bathroom or something.
Pick 2 red ones because it will be harder to notice who's who when they're all together. I'd be interested to know how many dogs are allowed on a property in your area. 4 huge dogs roaming the entire yard and barking all day (and night) would be much worse than 6 little ol' hens. How about cats? They jump the fence and poop in the veggie garden.
Wonder how many cats you can have. Chickens are misunderstood and get the short end of the stick.
Chicken Power!!!
