Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Yeah while I am on vacation our pet sitter is taking the eggs. I mean shod I save up the eggs between now and when we leave to give to the family we are visiting while we are gone.

It's 57 degrees. Beach day - cancelled.

so i woke up to go to the coop ad i opened the nesting boxes and guess what i found.... An egg... SHELL! She laid yesterday at 1:00PM and i guess she laid VERY EARLY TODAY and the egg got stepped on or something... what do you think happend? Maybe was it another hen that laid and her shell was soft then cracked open? UGH an egg down the drain :/

When they first start laying, it's not uncommon for them to lay imperfect eggs. Do you have a dish of oyster shell for them? They will eat it when they need the extra calcium for shells.

Also, because of the length of the oviduct where the eggs are produced, it does take about 25 hours to complete the egg formation process. An egg can get slowed down along the way, but rarely will they be sped up to get two in less than a day. Did she lay an egg the day before yesterday? If not, then yesterday's 1pm egg might have been delayed from the day before while this morning's egg was still working its way down the pipe. If she did lay the day before yesterday, then I think you may have a second girl laying.

What kind of combs do they have?  And am I seeing little beards?  I thought maybe Marans, but those legs looks extra feathery, so maybe a Cochin cross.  They aren't the right shape to be Langshan, which are elegantly vase shaped. If the lady had Ameraucanas (or EEs) and Cochins, then that would be my guess.  No red in the face at all, so you've got more waiting on these.

The other pretty gold pullet you showed looks like a beardless EE (no wattles!) but it was hard to see the comb type.  The comb looked pale in the pics, so doubtful that she is your layer.  If that's a single comb she has, you may end up with brown eggs form her, though. 


This is the only one that looks like it is of laying age.  Is it a Cream Legbar?  Maybe that pretty blue egg is from this one.

Yes I've got 2 cream legbars that are old enough but stopped laying when we bought them for over a month and then I bought an older EE that I don't have pictures of yet but we found an egg the next day we brought her home.

Speaking of the egg laying process, some of you guys have talked about people that don't want farm eggs because they think the eggs are soiled coming out of the same place the poop comes out.

NOT TRUE! The eggs are never in the intestinal tract and are never in contact with feces inside the hen. The end of the oviduct is very near the vent, and there is a section of the oviduct that will extend down through the vent while the egg is laid, keeping it pristinely clean. The egg is never in the "poop tube". If it gets dirty, it's from stool hanging around on the outside of the vent, or on the feathers, feet, and nest. Cool, huh?

Yes I've got 2 cream legbars that are old enough but stopped laying when we bought them for over a month and then I bought an older EE that I don't have pictures of yet but we found an egg the next day we brought her home.

Bummer about the CLs. Moving and adding new flockmates is stressful, and it can take them some time to get back in gear. I don't think a month is extreme for a break, especially if they are older. The EE may handle stress better, but more likely, that egg was partly formed and on it's way from the previous day. Have you got more from her? Hope you get some more eggs soon!

If she lays another egg this afternoon (the timing would make sense), that will confirm you have 2nd layer.

We brought her home Friday and got an egg Saturday and Sunday but none Monday.
