Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I think free necropsy is a good thing to offer, it could be so helpful in identifying contagious illness in backyard flocks. Not to say one should immediately go there for one isolated death. It's hard to know just the right answers, I would have done what you did in this instance, but it's hard to lose any animal you are fond of. And it's hard not to be fond of these silly birds

Thanks Hershy. CA has a lot of large poultry producers, so there is always the fear of the horrible spreading diseases, like Newcastles. I think they want to keep checks on the backyard flocks to prevent those diseases from causing too much destruction. Weird thing is, they almost always originate in the big commercial flocks. Ha! Maybe I've got it backwards- it's how they keep tabs on what's going on in the commercial houses! I don't think I'd want to live close to one. Every time the wind blows your way...

Kinda like CA's ban on fruits and veggies from out of state. It's got great intent, but reality is a little different. Glad you don't live next to one of those commercial guys, it would be worrisome to think of them infecting your flock.

New egg record today!!!

11 from the RSL's
4 from the ducks ( finally )
Still 0 from the silkies

Unfortunately we lost one of the red today. She had torn herself laying and the others had pecked her almost to death. She was so torn up she could hardly move. I had to make a decision and I think she was to far gone so I had to cull her. So it has been a bitter sweet day. It sounds weird but I thanked her for her eggs before I did it.

She was fine Friday morning. I tend to them every morning before work and give them fresh water ect. I can't help but wonder if it was heat related. There has not been a day since she got on that nest that has not been 90 plus degrees. And in Kentucky you have humidity to go with it. W4W that is true she was a hatchery bird and both of my BO hens have had problems with their legs. They are past that two year mark too. I do feel some guilt for not picking up on the fact that something might be wrong with her but I always just leave the broody hens alone. That seems like the way they like it. Cheeka I did not try to hatch the eggs myself in the incubator but I did think about it.
I have hatched eggs about 20 of my chickens are our own eggs, I got chickens from a hatchery and will never go back here again, one peep died 2 days after we got it, never stopped peeping day and night, have 2 that have little feathers and one that was bold at 2 weeks, sent picture to company and told them what happened they said we will replace them the next order you do, who is to say they would not be that way to, I have had very good luck with tsc got 6 red sexlicks went back next week got 7 black sexlacks, but they have gold on the neck. I even got a hatcher that turns so if we do it again we are ready, it is heart braken when one of them do die, sorry about your little one but just think of it this way she is in chicken heaven running around.

here in Delaware you have to be so many feet from a chicken house, people next door to them can not have chickens. we had to register our flock and if there is a problem they call you to let you know, we also have meeting once a year and with dinner, no not chicken.

Lost one of the bator babies today. I am pretty sure Ratchet got it but hubby does not think so. We dug a ditch by hand to bury electric cable to run power to hubby's building. I got sunburned and have blisters on my hands. In the middle of that the breeder we got Paisley from called and wanted to know if we Iwanted a male..... he's 2 , AKC registered and up to date on everything. She has 3 males and they have been fighting, and she needed to find him a home. So.... I think I am going Crazy! His name is Harley.

A man ordered 20 chicks, and all but I think 3 were dead upon arrival, the rest within a few hours.
I did mail order for some of our chicks they did fine that way, one peep never stoped peeping from the time they got to post office, mail lady asked if she could see them wanted to see the big mouth but 2 days later it died, I have more problems with the looks of peeps, I got 3 that the feathers are bad one of them has no feathers was bold at 2 weeks old I called co to tell them about it they told me they would replace them with next order, no don't think so will take the loss and never get them like that again. had better luck with tsc.

Greetings All - the day was not as bad as I imagined having only gotten 4.5 hours sleep last night...and the baseball game was a lot of fun! the team won and there was a great fireworks show afterward. the only bummer was rushing about this afternoon to get outta here, I forgot my camera. I got some pics on my phone but they're just not good quality. I had collected 8 eggs before I left, and found 1 more tonight. I didn't check all the nests - too much risk of waking up a rooster or 2 (or 12) so, now... I'm all thrown off schedule because I've stayed up too late a few nights in a row and I'm jacked up on stadium coffee. good thing I have 2 days off in a row to snap out of it and get back on track. the trick is to put "A Bug's Life" movie on the DVR. I never make it past Flick's arrival to the city. nighty night and sweet dreams!
