Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

hahaha lindz, is that Harriet at your knee? love the closeup! the Cochin girls are gorgeous! and I think you're right on with the genders - can't wait to see pics of the rest!

I may pick up a bantam Marans and a tiny silver spangled something. they are too small to get on in the flock they are in... and with my bantam crew growing... why not? plus she has a bantam Cochin mix that she says looks like Peach. don't know if I can handle that one, but I bet if I see her, I'll fall in love.

I'll sleep on it
TWO eggs today. sheesh

Cheeka, so sorry about Peach.

Such a darling little mama, and not with us long enough. Hugs for you, my friend.

Wow, MC, you've been struggling for so long there, mostly by yourself. It's enough work to take care of animals under the best of situations, so I bet the frustration you've felt kills a lot of the enjoyment. Now instead of chicken stories, we will get stories from the road! Best wishes to you and don't forget about us!

lynnc, they sound ready any day now! Some of mine did get quite grumpy just before they started. If you put decoy eggs (golf balls work!) in the nest boxes, they are less likely to lay in secret nests. (Except for Clindz's birds who like to play games with her.

lindz, love all the pics. Your Am-white rock cross is really nice. Does she lay green eggs?

JW, those are nice looking chicks. What breed are they? My Serama pullets finally started laying. The eggs are tiny, quarter sized.

Nope, it is her sister Jezebel.... She is one that will climb all over you for goodies! I'll work on getting pictures of the others tomorrow!

Hello everyone,

Awww, I am sorry about Peach. I wish MC many happy adventures in the truck. The pictures of all the baby chicks are making me think thoughts of getting the incubator out, again.

Roger, Hecate, my Barred One, says you could come to NM. But, there is a rooster here. He keeps having "thoughts." Fortunately, the other baby roos went into the garage and never came out when they started having "thoughts." But this one keeps hanging around. Hecate tried molting, going on a hunger strike, and refusing to leave the roost bar in the coop, but he hasn't gotten the hint. Besides, Hattie's crazy. Rigel and George, the other girls are just kind of quiet. A good peck now and then keeps them in order. Rigel is particularly fun to peck because she squawks and runs around, fluttering and knocks over the water container. But, every time Hattie goes for a peck, Gilgamesh starts having those thoughts.

Frothy clouds of barred feathers and blue feathers, white feathers and gold feathers drift about the eggless nests and coop. Why did George molt? She just hatched on New Years! Rigel isn't molting, but she hasn't laid anything, yet, either. She hatched on Easter and it's past time for her to step up or visit the Garage of Doom. Anyway, Hattie started the molting business over a month ago, and she has finally started paying egg rent again. She also seems to love the roo, which I find odd, as she used to think she was a roo. They have a minor squabble every morning, then she sticks to him like feathers to poo - oh, wait, I should probably come up with a different analogy. Poor, confused Hattie. I guess she lives in the moment.

One of my coworkers was rather appalled that I had a roo in there with the hens. They expressed concern that then there would be chicks and then too many chickens. Silly coworker. Like there could be "too many chickens." Besides, I explained to her that birth control for chickens is an omelet. Really not an issue. She is now a bit grossed out.

Gilgamesh and Rigel. Gil's comb has since straightened out and he's gotten a bit more "oomph"
