Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Cheeka, I am sorry to hear about peach. We also lost a treasured pet yesterday. Chipper, my son's Guinea Pig. I know they are just overgrown rats but chipper was the sweetest little thing. The whole family loved him. It was such a nice evening. The house was clean and I had taken the kids to mc Donalds for dinner for a treat and after we got home he had him out of his cage and there was an accident. I think he fell. My son who is 11 came I screaming and handed me chipper and I knew he was done for. My son was beside himself and completely out of his mind hysterical. I wrapped chipper in in towel and he died in my arms within minutes. We all cried. It was horrible. I really miss chipper. He was really the best Guinea Pig.

Doubly sad when the kids are so upset too.

I've had some some wonderful g.pigs over the years. I love the weep-weep feed-me sound.

Wishing4Wings thanks, they are so entertaining and fun.. love these girls, put a roof on the run yesterday so as the winter comes, they will be dryer and better protected.

*groan* You just reminded me that there are leaks in both of my covered runs. One just needs a new tarp, so easy peasy. The other, though, is a plastic corrugated deal. We've had such little rain, the roof hasn't been tested much, but one 15 minute downpour last month caused a big puddle. Got to see if we have any silicone caulking that's still good.

Having a dry place for them really helps keep the eggs clean in the winter. You'll get snow too, I assume. I love pictures of chickens in the snow.

Cheeka so sorry to hear about peach! She sounded like an awesome chicken!

Mortie condolences on chipper. It's even worse when we think it's cause of something we did. Hope your son realizes that sometimes in life accidents just happen, it's how we respond to them that make us who were are!

Whoops good hearing from you. My chickens that are a year old went thro a mini molt. I had one that looked pretty bad and Phyllis list all her tail feathers. They're just now starting to grow back.

I've been staining wood for the chicken run all weekend and came inside for lunch. Now kitty is curled up in my lap and I don't want to go outside! But I should cause hubby is still out there working. I want sand in the run so he's being a good boy and digging out the grass.

Alright I'm going out!!!!

After seeing Cheeka's update on FB I knew I had to finally post. Peach was one of the girls I really looked forward to hearing about, such a beautiful and loving Momma.

I still have about 150 pages to read before being up to date, can't even tell you guys how long I've stalked this thread. Almost there though!

My flock currently has 3 dark cornish girls. Only one of them was laying when I started reading this thread, now all 3 are. One of them only started laying about 2 weeks ago at exactly 8 months old. We thought for sure she was defective, but now she lays the biggest eggs of all.

We also have 7 lorps, 2 roos and 5 pullets. These guys are only 4 weeks old. As well as an EE that we aren't sure on yet, -he/she is displayed as my picture currently!- most likely a roo since it was an extra in our order. Either way, the EE is named Ruffles. Only one of the lorps has a name so far, my oldest has named her Snow White.

I'm not going to lie, Cheeka those eggs of your had me make a decision a month ago! I looked at my husband, and bluntly told him, "I've decided to order rainbow layers." And that was that. So I have more chicks coming in Wednesday! Can't wait to see what all I get. No sooner that I ordered I realized something though.... What if I get a BR Roger.

All of our birds have come from McMurray since there isn't many people in our area that have chickens. We've had wonderful luck with them so far.


Mortie I hope you have more than the one egg layer by the time I catch up! I'm also so sorry for your loss, it's so hard losing a pet.

Whoops ~ LOL! so good to catch up! Rigel and Gil are beauties ~ we're heavy in molt here too, been going on since mid summer when the Dec chicks turned 18 months old... I could go into the mattress business with all the feathers...

and to the thread! and thank you for your kind words. Peach and I had quite a bond. I adored her for so many reasons, most of which was her absolute tameness. she never darted away from my hand, always allowed me to pick her up... I am still shocked by the whole thing.
can't wait to see pics of your current and upcoming darlings! tinted eggs sure do make for beautiful presentations - I think each and every egg is a treasure, and the cream colored laying BR's are a valuable asset to any flock, even one like Roger - the entertainment factor alone is priceless...!!!

it's windy and chilly today, we actually had flurries this morning. I took one pic, but it's still in the camera til later. don't know if the snowflakes will show up.
so I spent a good part of the morning putting the vinyl wall sheets back up on the back pen to give them a break from the wind. didn't take long til I couldn't feel my fingers and retreated to the house.

Black with pea combs.... I'm thinking girl on left boy on right.

First 3 whites.... I'm thinking 2 boys and 1 girl on the right.

Black straight comb.... boy on top, girl on bottom.

Last 2 whites.... hoping both are pullets.


So I'm hoping that this brood is more equal in genders than the previous ones! What is yall's opinions?
