Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

nice MC, now I'm hungry. but I have pheasant in the fridge. I will be raising pheasant next. so delicious!

well... I did it. I got 3 bantams in exchange for roughly 40 lbs of potatoes

I'll get better pics either later or tomorrow, but the silvery one is definitely D'Uccle, maybe a cross but def a D'Uccle... the dark one is a Cochin EE cross and the peach girl is also a Cochin cross, and a bad Mama. she brooded and hatched and systematically killed her chicks one by one. the previous owner thinks she might do better next year, but I'm not going to test her. tough noogies. so, they're living in the broody pen for the next month.

So cute! and amazing trade!!

Cheeka, what a score! I love the EE, of course. So pretty. The d'Uccle looks like a porcelain (diluted millefleur), my favorite color! And bad mama may not get to rise chicks, but she sure is cute! Peach will never be replaced, but Gossy can handle the hatches.

I finally got some pics loaded of my new girls, but it will have to wait until later.

Pretty girls!

Sad day here. Harriet lost 2 of the little white chicks today. Hubby thinks crows grabbed them, but I am guessing a hawk and the crows were running it off. I don't know for sure though. I am going to have to figure out who is making the cull list for sure. I will have to do it on a couple different days because I am cutting WAY back. I know for sure that the rooster, 2 EE girls, and the 2 cockerels from Harriet's first brood are on the list. I will have to give the cockerels from the incubator crew a couple more months to grow before they will be big enough to bother with. I am debating the Comets except for Harriet. She is not going anywhere....

yeah, it was a good trade and I'm glad the bad Mama doesn't really look like Peach at all, and between Gossy and Big Broody and perhaps Esther if she'll cooperate, I'll have plenty of chicks - not only that, but I have tiny Cressa chick who is likely to follow suit and even Lilac might as she was raised by both the Super Broody bantams... speaking of... Lilac is turning out very pretty, can't wait for her first green egg!

and that's tiny Cressa behind her.

Handyman was up this afternoon and we finished the roof! the final section had to be paneled with plywood, I didn't have anymore corrugated panels.

sealed the panels with the heavy duty vinyl... leak proof!

I'll have to stand much further back to get the whole unit. still have to put the vinyl walls up all around, but the back is done now...

So I got the replacement pullets a couple of weeks ago for the 3 that I had to cull. The box had been crush in along one side, but luckily the birds were fine.

I was hoping LIVE BIRDS were still inside!

Kind of cramped, but okay.

Marans, cuckoo Orp, and big red jubilee Orp.

They were very thirsty and hungry. The cuckoo Orp is from a different hatch and is tiny compared to the others. I am hoping it really is a pullet. The 2 older birds are so friendly. They will let you pet them, but the cuckoo runs around like a scaredy dingbat. In 2 weeks, HER comb and wattles are a bit bigger than here, but still ghostly white, so I am starting to relax about HER being a SHE.
