Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

19° and feels like 3°...... I'm not liking the cold this early in the season! Most of the chickens are doing fine but I do have two that are molting very hard and they are really feeling the cold! They are only coming out of the coop to eat and drink then back in they go! Hubby and I covered up some drafts in the coop and I think we are going to put up some plastic this week. I'm still only getting 2-4 eggs per day. I hope the oldest pullets from this year start laying soon!
Lindz, It didn't get that cold here, but it did get down to 17 last night. I have one girl that is having a pretty hard molt, but her new feathers are starting to come in pretty good now. I'm getting 4-5 eggs a day from my 6 girls.

We are getting a little rain today and a LOT of wind. My patio is carpeted with pine needles from the neighbor's grossly overgrown tree.

I don't even want to see the roof. Guess I'm grumpy too. Ay least I'm not shoveling snow.

Been getting 0 to 3 eggs from my nine big hens. 2 are seriously molting, and the others are just having a vacation.

Getting 5 or so Serama eggs a day (out of 10 possible), but now 1 hen and at least 2 pullets have are broody, silly things. Silkie and the bantam Cochins are not laying either. You can make a pretty good omelet with about 15 eggs.

MC, maybe Santa will give you a coffee mug this year, and you can use it in those questionable restaurants.

At least all the germs will be yours!

Make sure the down spouts are working before the big rain this weekend!

Good idea Ron. We got tired of constantly cleaning out those stupid pine needles and put some leaf guards over the gutters. I need to check and make sure they are working. So far, not enough rain here to matter, although they got a good bit in town. Hoping we all get a good dose in the next few days!

we had a good 2.5 hours of free range this afternoon. it's cold, but dry... much better than our neighbors to the west! they've gotten roughly 8' of snow in Buffalo NY in 36 hours and it's still falling.

Buffalo has been hammered, repeatedly. they have over 8' of snow. as far as I know, it's still snowing, but I've not watched any news today. I'm in a funk, all of my birthday plans have fallen apart, but it's cool, more time for peace and quiet and chickens.

W4W, yeah, everything's good... working a lot, getting old and can't keep up I guess.. I'll still have some birthday fun, I did take Saturday off, so I have a nice weekend... second Saturday off in 15 years. that alone is a big deal worth celebrating!
