Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I'm 40 posts behind but wanted to jump ahead to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!! we had a fun day... played Toss the Meat Bits... but those who were too slow to dash and grab got hand fed, so the game became Twist Mama's Knuckles and Pinch the Crap Outta Her Fingertips... it was lotsa fun. for them.

then I made a fabulous Pie - Mackerel in Brine, tomatoes, okra and corn, BOSS, millet and a little feed to soak up some liquid. it was a huge hit! of course, I made cereal garlands for snacking... overall, a fun day. hope y'all had a wonderful time with loved ones!

caught Lilac checking out the nest. Gossamer laid an egg today, I was hoping she would too... but my guess from the summer was the 29th

jam packed with nutrition! they really look fabulous now that molting is over

nighty-night! the next 2 days will be insane at work, so I have to get to bed early!

W4W any eggs???

Glad to hear from you cheeka!!!

Goats are settling in nicely. We still have some green grass in their pasture and they were happily munching away today!

We enjoyed a fabulous day. Near 50, sunny. We washed the cars in the driveway. Picked up dog poop. Took down the christmas lights. I made 2 jugs of chicken food and refilled their water. The chicken food I put in cat litter jugs so it's easy pour, and I've been mixing it with a bit of cat food for winter for extra nutrition for them on those cold nights. It's maybe 5% cat food. Last batch had boss in it too.

Around 3 pm I decided to go put the girls away before it got cold and dark. I go into the back yard (member guys, I'm urban lol) and I don't see them at first. They go under the deck a lot though so I'm not concerned. I walk across the yard calling to them. Chickies! chick-chick-chick! Expecting them to pop out at any moment and follow me around like they do. I get into the scratch and start shaking the can. No chickens.

Dead silence.

Now I'm starting to wonder...did they fly the coop? They are fully capable of going over my fence, they just never have. Was today the day Maggie lead them all astray?

I'm shaking the can really hard now, and starting to feel a note of...not panic but definitely desperation creep into my veins. I go over to the other side of the house to the raspberry patch. Surely they're not over there because if they were, they would have heard me.

Nope. They're there.

Jerks.

To kinda get an idea of how my yard is shaped, picture a cartoon dog bone. You know, with 2 fat ends. The back of my house and the back fence making up the long straight part with 2 fat areas of yard on each side. Their coop and run are on one fat side and they were way over on the other side of the garage, on the other fat end....out of sight and apparently out of earshot. Hopefully they fertilized my raspberries well while they were over there!

dog bone was over simplified. My drawing is not to scale. Basically my back yard is fairly narrow with 2 fat ends...the're not rounded like a dog bone though. In the drawing the house should probably project farther into the back yard. The dashed line is the fence. It's a 6 ft privacy fence.
