Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Sounds like you have given her a good life. Reminds me of Scrambles' Rumples. We do love our chickens, don't we?

I have yet to have an injury or illness but I'm sure it's coming. So far our chickening experience has been nothing but smooth sailing with the exception of my favorite pullet vanishing the day of our first free range. I'm still a little miffed about that. Can't be helped I suppose. I know I'll be sad when one of my girls goes :(. I try not to anthropamorphize them but I do love the little boogers.

Yes, when I first read this thread, I thought about the similarities between babs and rumples and for a long time (and now) I hold out hope that rumples will recover just like our babs did. :)

Sorry to hear about your hen, Min. Hope she recovers. Winter can be extra hard on them, so giving her a little extra warmth can make all the difference. Long time ago I rescued a broiler cockerel from the middle of a busy highway. Compartment door on the transport truck must have opened up on the way to the slaughterhouse, as several other birds were lying dead on the road. Frank was sitting on the center line watching all the cars zoom by. I couldn't leave him there! Poor guy had a lot to learn about life outside a cage. I had to teach him to walk, drink from a crock, and not to be afraid of grass. I had to learn that meat birds aren't meant to survive much past 4 months. When his legs gave out and he couldn't walk, I had him put down at the vets.

At least he had a couple months of a real life, so I felt good about that.

Min... You have given Babs a great life. We do the best we can for our pets... Chickens included. Rumples has become my favorite. She used to hate me, but now, when she see me, she stumbles over to the door to greet me and wait for goodies. She gets the lions share. She has not laid an egg since her feathers were plucked, but I am sure she will. Actually, when I first saw that she was unable to walk, I just wanted her to survive long enough to raise her chicks.... They are grown up and just started to lay eggs. Lil Bit is on the nest right now.

We are expected to get a snow storm beginning tonight, so I am preparing. I need to get the pen roof cleared off and fresh water in. One egg so far and one in the process. Oh ya.... Nugget's egg was in the nest very early, so.... she might have laid late last night or early this morning. I was hoping the she had taken a day off.

HUGS....

Rainy yucky day here. It isn't phasing the chickens much. They are still out pecking around and head under or in the coops if it rains hard. I had to go to the feed store and they didn't have the feed that I normally get because the truck was running behind due to the holiday. I got something different and will have to go back at the first of the week.

Grrrr.............

I look outside and see that Cody has stolen the ham bone from the chicken pen. Bad dog!! He looked up and saw me looking at him and without saying one word... he slithered back to the patio.
